COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's College baseball first-year Joe Webber (Marshfield, Mass./Bridgton Academy) was named Northeast-10 Conference Co-Rookie of the Week while classmate Alex Mendez (Fallon, Nev./Churchill County) landed on the NE10 Weekly Honor Roll, his second recognition of the season, for the week ending on Sunday, April 8.
In his only game last week, Webber went 3-for-4 with a grand slam and a stolen base in a 5-4, 10-inning loss at regionally-ranked Southern New Hampshire University on Wednesday. His home run gave the Purple Knights an eighth-inning lead. The outfielder is batting .258 through 10 appearances with a .343 on-base percentage and .452 slugging percentage, having scored six runs and driven in five more while hitting two home runs and stealing five bases. Webber leads the team in home runs and is second in slugging percentage, third in on-base percentage and fourth in batting average.
Mendez tossed five no-hit, shutout innings before taking a no-decision against regionally-ranked Stonehill College last Monday, walking four and striking out three. The right-handed pitcher has started four games out of six appearances on the mound, allowing 18 hits through 24.1 innings while striking out 10. Opponents bat only .207 against Mendez, the lowest on the team among starters.
The Purple Knights host Saint Anselm College on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. for a single game.
