DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College baseball team lost a pair of seven-inning affairs at Mercy (N.Y.) College, 17-2 and 4-3, on Saturday at Mercy Field to kick off a three-game weekend set. The Purple Knights are 4-10, having played 10 games in seven days, while the Mavericks improved to 7-13. The teams played for the first time since 2011, opposing each other at a campus site for the first time since 2005.
First-year Danté Moran (Saint Petersburg, Fla./Dixie Hollins) was 3-for-3 with one run, two RBIs, a double and his first college home run in game one, while classmates Holden Jackman (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood) and Joe Webber (Marshfield, Mass./Bridgton Academy) both walked twice, with Webber stealing a base. Junior Trevor Allen's (Dennis, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) 23rd career double tied him for seventh in program history with Matt Baker '97. Classmate Drew Farris (Andover, Mass./Saint John's Prep) took the loss.
Junior Joseph Sadallah finished 3-for-4 with three runs, four RBIs, a walk and three doubles for Mercy, sophomore John Mooradian had three hits and four RBIs, and junior Gerardo Reyes was 3-for-4 with two runs and a walk. Classmate Miguel Ortiz Sanchez drove in three, and junior Adonis Garcia homered while scoring three runs and driving in three. Classmate Kevin Tise earned the win, yielding two runs on three hits in four frames.
Garcia homered in the second before Mooradian's RBI single in the third pushed the lead to 2-0, but Moran's two-out, two-run blast in the fourth inning knotted the contest, also plating Allen. Farris put out two of the first four batters in the home half, keeping the game tied, before nine of the next 11 hitters - including the first six - came through with hits, as the Mavericks scored 12 runs, all with two out. Mooradian and Sadallah both had three RBIs on two hits in the frame, with Sadallah doubling twice. Mercy scored three more runs in the fifth.
Allen was 2-for-4 with a run, an RBI and his first career triple in the nightcap, while junior Joe Robertson (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) and first-year Iset Maldonado (Brooklyn, N.Y./Saint Francis Prep) both had two hits while scoring a run. First-year Zach Rodgers (Parrish, Fla./Manatee) took the complete-game loss, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out a career-high seven and walking none.
Ortiz Sanchez was 2-for-2 with a run, three RBIs and a homer, and junior Josue Perez finished 2-for-3 with a run. First-year Jack Kelly worked 4.1 innings to take the win, yielding two earned runs and striking out three, before senior Juan Perez nabbed the 2.2-inning save behind shutout relief, as he gave up one hit.
Allen singled and moved up on an error in the second, and first-year Julien Giroux-Harvey's (Montreal Québec/Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf) infield knock brought him home with two out. Ortiz Sanchez countered with a three-run homer in the home half, and first-year Zak Kain's RBI single with two out in the third made it 4-1.
Allen tripled home Robertson in the fourth, and sophomore Connor Hopkins' (Windham, N.H./Windham) sac fly brought Maldonado around in the fifth to cut the deficit to 4-3. After Moran and Robertson singled to load the bases, Juan Perez came in to get a popup and tapper back to the mound. Rodgers got eight outs while retiring his final seven hitters to keep the Purple Knights within striking distance, and the visitors loaded the bases with two down in the sixth before a groundout ended the threat. They went down 1-2-3 in the seventh.
The teams return to action for a single contest tomorrow at 12 p.m.
