Baseball Pulls Away with Four-Run Ninth to Down Edgewood

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Thanks to a four-run ninth inning, the Saint Michael's College baseball team pulled away from Edgewood (Wis.) College for a 7-1 victory on Wednesday during the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at the Player Development Complex. The Purple Knights are 3-8, while the Eagles slipped to 2-3.

Junior Joe Robertson (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) was 3-for-5 with two runs, an RBI, two doubles and a stolen base for the Purple and Gold, while first-year Cameron Kroeger (Clearwater, Fla./Countryside) came off the bench to go 2-for-2 with one run, two RBIs, a double and a steal. Junior Trevor Allen (Dennis, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) finished 2-for-4 with a hit-by-pitch, and first-year Joe Webber (Marshfield, Mass./Bridgton Academy) hit his first collegiate home run. Classmate Joe Brady (Hanover, Mass./Bridgton Academy) drove in two runs, and first-year Iset Maldonado (Brooklyn, N.Y./Saint Francis Prep) had a hit, walk and run.

As the third of five pitchers, senior lefty Colin Brennan (Braintree, Mass./Boston College HS) picked up the win after tossing two one-hit, shutout innings. First-year Dan Favicchio (Massapequa, N.Y./Saint John the Baptist Diocesan) blanked Edgewood on one hit during the opening 3.1 frames in his first college start, fanning four. Junior Drew Farris (Andover, Mass./Saint John's Prep) and first-year Alex Mendez (Fallon, Nev./Churchill County) spun shutout innings following Brennan's outing.

Senior Alex Fowler and junior Ryan Fields both had two hits for the Eagles, while senior Garrett Bogucki walked twice. First-year Connor Schatzberg took the loss after allowing three runs on six hits in seven innings. He struck out seven.

Favicchio worked around two base runners in each of the first two innings to keep the game scoreless, and Webber's solo homer with one down in the top of the third broke the stalemate. Robertson singled and stole second before scoring on Brady's fourth-inning double, pushing the lead to two.

Junior Christian Devine (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) came out of the bullpen to record three straight outs before running into a jam in the fifth, as senior Nik Visone singled home junior Bryan Sternig with one out before the Eagles had two on and one out. A sac bunt was followed by a walk to load the bases, but the final batter flew out to left, and the Purple Knights still led 2-1.

Kroeger's two-out, pinch-hit RBI double scored first-year third baseman Danté Moran (Saint Petersburg, Fla./Dixie Hollins) to make it 3-1 in the seventh, and Moran cut down the lead runner on a force play at the plate in the home half before Farris escaped the threat by inducing a popup to Brady at first base.

Kroeger and first-year Anthony Azpeitia (Tampa, Fla./King) knocked back-to-back RBI singles in the ninth before Robertson's run-scoring double pushed the lead to five. Brady completed the scoring with a sac fly. Mendez worked around a bases-loaded, two-out situation in the home half by fanning the final Eagle hitter.

The Purple Knights close out their eight-game Spring Break trip tomorrow against Skidmore College at 9 a.m. at the Terry Park Sports Complex.
