Baseball swept in NE10 road doubleheader at Bentley

WALTHAM, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College baseball team was swept in a doubleheader at Bentley University, 11-5 and 5-4, on Saturday during Northeast-10 Conference play at DeFelice Field. The Purple Knights are 0-8 overall and in the league, while the Falcons improved to 5-16-1 and 3-3-1.

In the opener, first-year Connor Hopkins (Windham, N.H./Windham) was 2-for-3 with a run and two walks for the visitors. Sophomore Trevor Allen (Dennis, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a walk, while senior Drew Salk (Billerica, Mass./Billerica Memorial) went 2-for-5 with a run and a double. Sophomore Dan Flynn (Williamstown, Mass./Mount Greylock Regional) was 1-for-3 with a run and a walk, while junior Morgan Wilson (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township Senior) took the loss after yielding six runs, but four earned, in 1.1 innings. Sophomore Harry Southworth (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) made his college pitching debut by firing a one-hit, shutout eighth inning, striking out one.

First-year Jake Pierce batted 3-for-3 with three runs for Bentley, and classmate Ryan Berardino was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Senior Jack Burke worked into the ninth for the win, allowing five runs, three of which were earned, in 8.1 frames. He struck out seven and walked five.

Bentley's six runs over the first two innings came home on a pair of infield grounders, two errors, a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch before the Purple Knights got two runs back in the third, with Allen coming through with an RBI single and sophomore Sean Winthrop (Hopkinton, Mass./Lawrence Academy) knocking a two-out double to score Salk. However, the Falcons tacked on five runs between the home half and the sixth inning to lead 11-2. Saint Michael's chipped away with three runs in the ninth, with each coming around on errors.

Junior PJ Jasak (Palmer, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson Academy/Le Moyne) went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the nightcap for the visitors, and sophomore Joe Robertson (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) finished 1-for-2 with a run and two hit by pitches. Winthrop had a hit and two RBIs, Salk doubled while driving in a run, and sophomore Calvin Holland (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) tripled and scored. Allen took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits in 5.1 innings. Junior Colin Brennan (Braintree, Mass./Boston College HS) spun 2.2 innings of relief, yielding only an unearned run on two hits.

Berardino was 2-for-3 with two runs, an RBI and three steals for Bentley, and junior Nick Neshe was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Sophomore Luke Dawson earned the win after three of his four runs were earned over eight-plus innings, striking out 15 and walking one. Classmate Ryan Corriveau fanned two of three batters for the save.

Winthrop doubled home a pair with two down in the first inning to give the Purple Knights a lead before first-year Luke Figueira led off the home half with a solo home run, and Neshe's two-run single put the hosts on top in the second. Jasak's single scored Robertson with the tying run in the sixth, but Berardino was hit by a pitch to start the home half before moving up on a wild pitch, stealing third and scoring on another wild pitch. His RBI knock with two down in the seventh made it 5-3.

The Purple Knights loaded the bases with two down in the eighth but were unable to push across a run. Holland led off the ninth with a triple, prompting Corriveau to enter the game. Salk, the reliever's first batter, grounded out to bring Holland in and make it a 5-4 game, but Corriveau fanned the final two hitters.

The Purple Knights conclude a five-game weekend by visiting American International College tomorrow for a 12 p.m. twinbill.
