RINDGE, N.H. - In its first game since March 26, the Saint Michael's College baseball team lost to Saint Anselm College, 7-2, on Wednesday evening during Northeast-10 Conference play at Franklin Pierce University's Pappas Field. The Purple Knights are 0-5 overall and in the league, while the Hawks improved to 7-13 and 2-6.
Sophomore Trevor Allen (Dennis, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) went 2-for-3 with a walk and a double while yielding one unearned run in the opening inning as the first of seven pitchers. Junior PJ Jasak (Palmer, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson Academy/Le Moyne) was 1-for-3 with a hit by pitch, and sophomore Calvin Holland (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) drove in a run. Classmate Drew Farris (Andover, Mass./Saint John's Prep) spun two no-hit, scoreless frames, while juniors Patrick Martin (Wilton, N.H./Wilton-Lyndeborough Coop/Saint Joseph's [Maine]) and Morgan Wilson (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township Senior) also turned in shutout innings. Classmate Zack Lanzillo (Rutland, Vt./Mount Saint Joseph Academy) suffered the loss after allowing three runs in the third inning.
Senior Nick Bragole was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a run and a triple, while classmate Jon McQuarrie drove in two runs, tripled and hit a sacrifice fly. Sophomore Jonathan Dunn allowed both runs, with only one earned, in seven innings. He struck out nine and walked two.
The Purple Knights threatened almost immediately in the top of the first inning, as Allen doubled with one down and moved to third on Holland's single, but Dunn fanned the final two batters. Saint Anselm manufactured a run in the home half, as junior Max Wadington singled with one down, moved 90 feet apiece on a passed ball and a wild pitch, and came home on Bragole's groundout.
Sophomore Joe Robertson (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) walked with one out in the third, advanced to third on Allen's single and scored on Holland's fielder's choice grounder to tie the game. Jasak followed with a single, but Dunn induced a line-drive out to end the threat. Saint Anselm countered with three runs in the home half, as the Hawks utilized two sacrifice flies and Bragole's RBI single.
Saint Michael's trimmed its deficit to 4-2 in the fourth when senior Kyle Cone (York, Maine/York) and sophomore Dan Flynn (Williamstown, Mass./Mount Greylock Regional) executed a two-out double steal with runners on the corners, as Flynn swiped home. However, the next 10 Purple Knights went down in order, while McQuarrie provided his team's third sac fly of the game in the sixth inning to push the lead to 5-2.
Allen led off the eighth with a walk before Jasak was plunked with one out and senior Drew Salk (Billerica, Mass./Billerica Memorial) followed with a walk, and Saint Michael's twice brought the go-ahead run to the plate, but senior reliever John Lavoie got each to pop up to first base. McQuarrie tripled home an insurance run in the bottom of the inning before coming around to score on a wild pitch.
The Purple Knights visit Bentley University for their next three games, first playing a single contest on Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
