COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's College baseball senior Austin Ziskie (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) was named to the Northeast-10 Conference Weekly Honor Roll for the week ending on Sunday, March 25.
Ziskie fired a three-hit shutout at the University of New Haven on Sunday, winning a 1-0 game while striking out nine and walking two. He held the Chargers, who were ranked 10th in last week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) East region poll, to a .103 batting average while earning the Purple Knights their first NE-10 win since 1998, the last year the program was a conference member prior to this spring.
Against Ziskie, New Haven was 0-for-13 with runners on base and 1-for-10 with two outs. The 6-foot-4 righty engineered the team's initial league shutout since 1993, and its first 1-0 win over a Division II foe since 1992. New Haven put the tying run at third with one down in the ninth, but Ziskie fanned the next batter before inducing a game-ending groundout.
Since winning four games as a freshman and none as a sophomore or junior, despite having a 2.1:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio and yielding three earned runs or less during seven outings in those two seasons, Ziskie has begun his senior campaign at 2-0 with a 3.12 earned run average. His 15 strikeouts lead the staff, and he has walked only six while yielding an opposing .222 batting average. During Ziskie's two starts this year, he allowed just two earned runs in 15.1 innings for a 1.17 ERA.
The Purple Knights are 4-9 overall and 1-3 in the NE-10 after their first league weekend of the season. Saint Michael's heads to Southern New Hampshire University, which was seventh in last week's NCBWA national poll, on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. contest.
