Baseball Drops Two To Assumption On Senior Day

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College baseball team (5-25) fell to Assumption College 10-5 and 12-4 in doubleheader action at Doc Jacobs Field on Sunday. The games were the final home contests for seniors Pete Estes (Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union), Mike McDonough (East Hampton, Conn./East Hampton (Stetson)) and Ben Yodzio (Hingham, Mass./Hingham).

For the Purple Knights, junior Tim McDonnell (Durham, N.H./Oyster River) paced the offense with five hits, going 5-for-9 with two doubles and three runs scored. Sophomore Jacob Begnoche (Essex Jct., Vt./Essex (Univ. of Vermont)) had four hits including two doubles, junior Chad Estey (New Haven, Vt./Mount Abraham Union) added three hits with a two-bagger, and freshman Alec Tice (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) went 3-for-5 in game one.

For Assumption, six players had multiple hits on the day, with Shane Keddy ripping a team-best five hits for six RBIs.

In game one, the Purple Knights outhit the Greyhounds 13 to nine but stranded 13 runners in process. Freshman Collin Fishman (Bethesda, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) took the loss on the mound for Saint Michael's in five innings of work, and tossed three scoreless innings before Assumption plated four runs in the top of the fourth. The Purple Knights rallied for three runs in the eigth inning to make it 8-4 but left the bases loaded, allowing Assumption pitcher Ysander Figueroa to escape the jam.

In game two, the Greyhounds scored in five of nine frames and used a five-run eighth inning to put the game away. Kevin Mayone scattered eight hits in seven innings for Assumption to earn the win, and Saint Michael's freshman Nick Myers (Canton, Conn./The Master's School) was saddled with the loss in 4.1 innings. McDonnell, Begnoche and freshman Tyler Wild (Quaker Hill, Conn./St. Bernard School) collected two hits apiece in the nightcap.

The Purple Knights close out the 2011 campaign on Wednesday with a doubleheader at in-state rival Norwich University at 3 p.m.
