Baseball Falls In Doubleheader At Assumption, 20-6 And 6-5
WORCESTER, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College baseball team (1-14) saw its losing skid reach 10 games on Monday with a pair of losses at Assumption College. The Purple Knights fell in the opener, 20-6, despite two home runs from senior Tony Bonvechio (Newport, Vt./North Country Union), and were edged in the nightcap, 6-5.
In game one, Assumption turned a 4-2 lead into a 12-2 advantage with an eight-run sixth inning, and sealed the decisive win with seven runs in the eighth inning. The Greyhounds banged out 23 hits in the opener, with Trevor Lawson going 5-for-6 at the plate, and Derek Migrants adding two home runs, a double, and five RBIs. Michael Colebrook fanned nine in six innings to improve to 4-1 on the season.
Bonvechio finished game one 3-for-3, while senior Jeff McLaughlin (Rutland, Vt./Rutland) doubled and drove in three runs. Sophomore Austin Ziskie (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda Chevy Chase) took the loss despite striking out eight in 5.1 innings pitched.
In game two, Assumption (16-9) earned its sixth win in the last seven games as Blake Youngblood's walk-off homer to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning was the difference. Youngblood finished the game 2-for-5 with two RBIs, while Mike Foley also homered in the nightcap for the Greyhounds. Dave McLean, the fifth and final pitcher for Assumption, got the win with 2.1 innings of hitless relief.
For Saint Michael's, sophomore Mike Cracchiola (Oyster Bay, N.Y./Kellenburg Memorial) doubled, singled and walked twice, while junior Ben Yodzio (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) also went 2-for-3 at the plate. Freshman Andrew Kelley (Lincoln, N.H./Lin-Wood) allowed just one earned run in five innings, leaving the game with a 3-1 lead, but senior Matt Beaulieu (Littleton, Mass./Lawrence Academy) was unable to preserve the lead, and suffered the loss.
Saint Michael's returns to action on Wednesday, as the Purple Knights host winless SUNY-Canton in a 3 p.m. home doubleheader on Doc Jacobs Field.
