Best of 2015-16: Winter Highlights

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College Department of Athletics presents highlights from the 2015-16 school year, continuing with the winter seasons.

November 7, 2015 – Men’s and women’s swimming & diving both defeat Colby-Sawyer. Sophomore Pierce Farrington wins four times for the men, while classmate Zach Kosakowski and first-year Pat Thornton claim three wins each. Junior Lindsay McNall has three wins for the women, and sophomore Genevieve Gigandet and first-year Patty Kohn win twice.

November 15, 2015 – Men’s basketball rallies from 24 points down to stun Molloy, 84-79. Junior Matt Bonds notches 27 points and 22 rebounds, and senior Greg Grippo scores 21 points.

November 20, 2015 – First-year Chris Johnson makes 42 saves, and junior Shawn Morrow provides the game-winner and an assist in men’s ice hockey’s 3-2 victory over Castleton. Senior Kevin Altidor and junior Anthony Maiuri also score.

December 5, 2015 – Behind sophomore Leah Spencer’s 21 points and 14 rebounds, women’s basketball wins at Stonehill, 79-73, for the first time since February 1991. Junior Indira Evora scores 19 points and senior Makenzie Burud adds 17. [ Highlights ] Fourteen players score points as women’s ice hockey downs Daniel Webster, 10-1. Senior Emily Loebs and juniors Athena Akiki and Erin Dwyer all produce three points, and junior Carolyn Avery scores twice. [ Highlights ]

January 2, 2016 – A game-ending 15-0 run sends women’s basketball past Southern New Hampshire, which was receiving national votes, 71-59. Sophomore Leah Spencer nets 18 points, and senior Makenzie Burud turns in 17 points and 15 rebounds.

January 10, 2016 – Junior Justin McKenzie scores 1:32 into overtime as men’s ice hockey downs Southern New Hampshire, 3-2. First-years Sam D’Antuono and Nic Hermary also score, and classmate Chris Johnson turns aside 45 shots. [ Highlights ]

January 15, 2016 – Sophomore Emma Barnes becomes the first Purple Knight Nordic skier to advance to sprint heats since 2007 – and the first female ever – while taking 30th in the 1.5K classic at Bates. The next day, Alpine skiing first-year Guillaume Grand is second in the slalom and classmate Torjus Grimsrud sixth.

January 23, 2016 – First-year Guillaume Grand posts two top-four showings and sophomore Meggane Grand is seventh in the slalom for Alpine skiing at Colby. Sophomore Emma Barnes’ 27th-place finish in the 15K classic is the best by a Purple Knight female Nordic skier since 2009.

January 26, 2016 – Women’s swimming & diving wins 16 events during a victory over Norwich, with senior Julie Shea and first-year Patty Kohn each accounting for four victories. Five others win twice.

January 29, 2016 – Senior Kevin Altidor and first-year Sam D’Antuono (2 goals) score 43 seconds apart to snap a third-period tie and give men’s ice hockey a 3-1 win at Skidmore. First-year Chris Johnson records 35 stops.

February 3, 2016 – Junior Matt Bonds puts forth 31 points and 19 rebounds during men’s basketball’s 74-71 overtime win against Merrimack.

February 6, 2016 – Women’s ice hockey junior Abby Burke makes 37 saves in a 3-0 victory over New England College. Juniors Lauren Cuculino, Tori Dinger and Erin Dwyer score.

February 13, 2016 – Men’s basketball upsets 19th-ranked Saint Anselm, 84-75. Senior Morrell Gaskins (17 points), junior Matt Bonds (18), and first-year Levi Holmes III (16) lead the way. [ Highlights ] Junior Indira Evora scores 19 points, and women’s basketball uses an 18-0 run to defeat Saint Anselm, 63-60. [ Highlights ]

February 14, 2016 – Women’s swimming & diving senior Julie Shea wins the 100 IM at the NEISDA Championship, as she sets her fourth school record in 10 days. First-years Patty Kohn and Pat Thornton each set one mark during the meet, as the women claim their third straight fourth-place finish and the men post their second straight fifth-place showing.

February 24, 2016 – Women’s ice hockey claims the first win-and-advance postseason victory in program history with a 5-2 upset of Sacred Heart during the NEHC Open Tournament play-in game. Junior Erin Dwyer scores twice, classmate Carolyn Avery and sophomore Ashley Dineen each total two points, and junior Abby Burke makes 28 saves. [ Highlights ]

March 11, 2016 – Alpine skiing first-year Guillaume Grand becomes the first skiing All-American in Saint Michael’s history when he finishes ninth in the slalom at the NCAA Championship. Sophomore Meggane Grand and first-year Torjus Grimsrud round out a school-record three NCAA Championship qualifiers to help the Purple Knights take 15th, the program’s best NCAA finish since 1988.
