COLCHESTER, Vt. - Here are some of the Saint Michael's College Athletics teams' highlights from the 2015-16 school year, beginning with the fall of 2015.
September 1, 2015 – In the presence of student-athletes and College administrators alike, Fr. Brian Cummings, SSE ’86 blesses the new Duffy Field turf, which was installed during summer 2015.
September 4, 2015 – Senior Kaylee Sullivan posts four saves to backstop women’s soccer to a 0-0 tie at Stonehill during the Catholic Cup. In a penalty-kick shootout, senior Marianna Nowacki converts the final goal to put the Purple Knights into the title game.
September 9, 2015 – Seniors Meagan Brady (1 assist) and Cassie Chernicki (2 assists) and junior Alyssa Keeler all score twice in a 10-0 women’s soccer win over Lyndon State. Seniors Sabrina Marasco and Marianna Nowacki and first-year Katie Miller also score.
September 12, 2015 – Women’s volleyball earns 3-2 wins over SUNY Cortland and Union to complete a four-match weekend sweep and win the Union Invitational. Junior Natalie Moore, the tournament MVP, passes the 1,000-dig plateau for her career, and senior Candace Washington is named all-tournament. Men’s cross country wins the Vermont Tech Invitational behind junior Ross Henry’s third-place finish. Classmate Torin La Liberte is fourth.
September 13, 2015 – Senior Alexandra Sulkin, junior Colleen O’Keefe and sophomore Amelia Weeks all win twice during women’s tennis’ 6-3 triumph over Saint Rose. Juniors Riley Kruger and Marissa Landry both earn their first college victories.
September 19, 2015 – Senior Colby Ajoku scores 4:43 into overtime to push men’s soccer past regionally-ranked Southern Connecticut State, 1-0. Classmate Nicco Roque registers a three-save shutout. Men’s golf first-year Tucker Buteau fires a 78 during his college debut on day one of the Duke Nelson Invitational.
September 20, 2015 – Women’s tennis downs New Haven, 9-0. Seniors Erica Bundrick and Alexandra Sulkin, juniors Nicole Kellogg and Colleen O’Keefe, and sophomore Amelia Weeks win twice.
September 27, 2015 – Women’s tennis loses a total of 10 games in a 9-0 win over Franklin Pierce. Seniors Erica Bundrick and Alexandra Sulkin, juniors Nicole Kellogg and Colleen O’Keefe, and sophomore Amelia Weeks all pick up two victories. [ Highlights by Nathan Hetrick '16 ]
September 29, 2015 – Senior Morgan Mazanec tips home classmate Megan Deschaine’s drive 4:11 into overtime to lift field hockey past Franklin Pierce, 2-1. Junior Abigail Bowie makes 10 saves. [ Mazanec's goal ]
October 3, 2015 – Men’s and women’s cross country both finish third at the Vermont Intercollegiate Championship. First-year Emily Calder (10th) and junior Molly Roush (11th) lead the women, while juniors Ross Henry (10th) and Torin La Liberte (12th) pace the men. First-year David Baird is 17th.
October 5, 2015 – Senior Nathaniel Young cards a 76, the low round by a men’s golfer during the season, on day two of the NE-10 Championship. His 156 strokes pace the team at the tournament.
October 10, 2015 – Senior O.J. Rivas’ 100th-minute strike produces a 2-1 men’s soccer overtime victory against AIC. Junior Aaron DaCosta also scores, and senior Nicco Roque makes five saves. [ Rivas' goal (James Buck) | Highlights ]
October 16, 2015 – Women’s volleyball rallies from two sets down for a 3-2 victory at Saint Anselm. Senior Candace Washington (6 blocks) and sophomore Megan Priester both post 18 kills, junior Catie Weller has 60 assists, and classmate Natalie Moore collects 21 digs. Senior Kelsey Flaherty tacks on 16 kills and 15 digs.
October 18, 2015 – Junior Abby Dusha records two goals and two assists within the first 13:18 during field hockey’s 8-0 win over Saint Thomas Aquinas, coming within one point of a school record for a half. Senior Mackenzie Hudson, junior Carolyn Avery and sophomore Jackie Matthews add one goal and an assist each, and junior Abigail Bowie makes four saves in the shutout.
October 24, 2015 – First-year Maddy Dobecki’s second goal of the game 6:51 into overtime gives field hockey a 2-1 victory against seventh-ranked Assumption. Junior Abigail Bowie makes six saves. [ Highlights ] Senior O.J. Rivas nets his second overtime winner in two weeks, scoring in the 105th minute to help men’s soccer down regionally-ranked Bentley, 3-2. October 25, 2015 – The cross country teams host their first NE-10 Championship since 2008. Junior Molly Roush paces the women in 48th place, while junior Torin La Liberte takes 50th in the men’s race to edge classmate Ross Henry by one spot. [ Highlights by Nathan Hetrick '16: Men | Women ]
November 3, 2015 – Men’s soccer makes its first NE-10 Championship appearance in eight years, losing to eventual NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 qualifier Southern New Hampshire, 3-0, in a quarterfinal. Senior Nicco Roque ties his career high with 10 saves against the Penmen, who end up claiming their fourth consecutive NE-10 Championship crown.
November 4, 2015 – The NCAA announces that, for the seventh consecutive year, Saint Michael’s student-athletes achieve a 98-percent graduation rate, tying the College for second in Division II.
November 7, 2015 – Women’s volleyball sweeps Pace, 3-0, for the first time behind sophomore Megan Priester’s 11 kills. Senior Kelsey Flaherty adds 10 kills, junior Catie Weller has 32 assists, and classmate Natalie Moore totals 26 digs. [ Highlights by Nathan Hetrick '16 ]
