COLCHESTER, Vt. - Five Saint Michael's College spring sport programs will head South this weekend to play a combined 31 contests during the College's week-long spring break. The Saint Michael's baseball, softball and men's lacrosse teams will open the 2011 season during spring break, while the women's tennis team looks to remain undefeated, and the women's lacrosse team seeks its first win of the season.
The Saint Michael's baseball team, led by third-year head coach Paul Morgan, is scheduled to play the most games during spring break, as the Purple Knights will open their season with 11 games in Florida. Eight of those games are part of the Palm Beach (Fla.) Challenge, as Saint Michael's will play several regionally-ranked programs, including its opener versus the University of Massachusetts Lowell on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. The other three games in the Sunshine State are against strong Florida programs: at Nova Southeastern University on Wednesday at 6 p.m., and two games at Palm Beach Atlantic University, coached by Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Gary Carter.
The Saint Michael's softball team, led by 11th-year head coach Robyn Newton, is slated to play 10 contests in a six-day span at the National Training Center Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. The Purple Knights will open their season on Sunday, as Saint Michael's takes on Molloy College at 3:30 p.m. and New York Institute of Technology at 5:30 p.m. Saint Michael's Florida schedule will prepare the squad for its 30-game Northeast-10 Conference schedule, which begins with a home doubleheader versus Merrimack College on March 29.
The Saint Michael's women's tennis team (6-0, 6-0 NE-10), ranked ninth in the East region, will put its perfect record on the line with four matches in Orlando, Fla., next week. The Purple Knights, led by eighth-year head coach Greg Cluff, are off to the best start in the program's 30-year history, and a strong showing in Florida will help the program in its bid for its fourth straight appearance in the NCAA Division II Championships.
The Saint Michael's men's lacrosse team will belatedly open its 2011 season during spring break, playing three games outside of New York City. The Purple Knights - scheduled to open their season at home on Wednesday versus Plattsburgh State University before the contest was postponed due to snow - will now begin their season on Monday at 3 p.m. against Seton Hill University in Purchase, N.Y. Led by eighth-year head coach and Long Island native Paul Schimoler, Saint Michael's will also play at Long Island programs Molloy and C.W. Post next week.
The Saint Michael's women's lacrosse team (0-2, 0-1 NE-10) will fly to the Carolinas in search of its first win of the season. The Purple Knights - led by first-year head coach Ashley Hughes - will play conference-rival Franklin Pierce University in a non-league contest on Sunday at 4 p.m. in Laurinburg, N.C., and also play at Converse College in South Carolina, and at Saint Andrews Presbyterian College.
