Four Saint Michael's Athletics Programs Land NE10 Team Academic Excellence Awards

COLCHESTER, Vt. - Four Saint Michael's College Athletics programs earned Northeast-10 Conference Team Academic Excellence Awards for their sports for the 2017-18 school year after posting the highest cumulative grade-point average in the league. Women's basketball, men's ice hockey, softball and men's swimming & diving were all lauded, as Saint Michael's was one short of league leader Pace University's five winning programs.

Women's basketball won for the first time since taking the NE10's inaugural award in 2009-10. With fifth-year head coach Shannon Kynoch at the helm, nine different Purple Knights claimed positions on the NE10 Commissioner's Honor Roll at some point this school year, necessitating a 3.0 semester, while rising senior Emily Ferreri (Hyde Park, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) became one of 13 student-athletes in the history of the College to garner College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America honors. Saint Michael's netted a league-leading 3.543 GPA among the NE10's 15 programs.

Men's ice hockey claimed the honor for the fourth time in eight seasons - and the second straight year - after the league established the award for the 2009-10 school year, also winning in 2010-11 and 2012-13. Under sixth-year head coach Damian DiGiulian, the Purple Knights posted a 3.245 GPA to top the six-team league. Twenty-two different student-athletes landed on the NE10 Commissioner's Honor Roll at least once in 2017-18.

Softball earned the NE10 Team Academic Excellence Award for the first time, buoyed by 14 NE10 Commissioner's Honor Roll qualifiers during head coach Robyn Newton's 18th and final season. Rising junior Torie Rathwell (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) landed CoSIDA Academic All-District accolades, while the Purple Knights accumulated a 3.511 GPA, topping the 15-school league.

Men's swimming & diving nabbed its initial NE10 Team Academic Excellence Award to cap a school year during which it was honored for each semester with a College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Team Scholar All-America Award. Eighth-year head coach Eileen Hall, whose charges' 3.546 GPA was best among the NE10's seven programs, saw each of her 11 student-athletes earn at least one NE10 Commissioner's Honor Roll nod.

The NE10 Team Academic Excellence Award is bestowed upon teams with the top GPA among each of the league's 24 sponsored sports. In all, 73.0 percent of the programs in the conference totaled a 3.0 GPA in 2017-18. Seventeen of 21 Saint Michael's programs registered 3.0 GPAs, all of which compete in the NE10.
