Purple Knights host Saint Michael's Invitational, women take third in strong field

COLCHESTER, Vt. - In their lone home race of the fall, the Saint Michael's College men's and women's cross country teams hosted the Saint Michael's Invitational on Friday, welcoming a trio of Vermont schools that have teams either nationally- or regionally-ranked to campus. The Purple Knight women took third with 80 points, while Middlebury College won with the minimum 15 points. The men's race went unscored due to the first 18 runners running the incorrect distance.

Lyndon State College and the University of Vermont also participated in the meet. The Middlebury women are ranked fifth in Division III by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), while the Panther men are tied for 17th. The Vermont women are 13th in the Division I Northeast region, while the Lyndon State men took second at the Vermont Intercollegiate Championship and have won a pair of competitions this fall.

Sophomore Chloe Boutelle (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) was the Purple Knights' top finisher for the fifth time in as many competitions this year, taking 13th in a time of 18:48 to trail 10 Panthers and a pair from Vermont. Boutelle completed the 5K course before 10 Catamounts. Classmate Lindy Heffernan (Sutton Mills, N.H./Kearsarge Regional) was 21st in 19:28, while senior Jennifer Labrenz (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) was 18 seconds back. Sophomores Colleen Gilliatt (Grantham, N.H./Lebanon) and Allie Gratton (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) rounded out the Purple and Gold's top five, clocking in at 20:28 and 20:33, respectively.

Senior Colin Delaney (Lake Placid, N.Y./National Sports Academy) paced the Saint Michael's men by nabbing 30th in a time of 27:00, sprinting past a Vermont runner at the finish line to nip the Catamount by one second. Junior Dana Glubiak (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) also cracked the 28-minute barrier, in 27:54, while sophomore Alex Gilgore (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville Senior) was at 28:10. Classmate Peter McKenna (Cohasset, Mass./Brooks School) was 19 seconds behind, and first-year Jack Loomis (Eastham, Mass./Nauset Regional) completed out his team's top five.

The Purple Knights return to action next Saturday in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship, which will be held at Jamesville (N.Y.) Beach Park. The women start at 10 a.m., and the men begin their race an hour later.
