COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's volleyball team was victorious in a 3-1 (25-13, 21-25, 25-22, 25-23) win over Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference play on Tuesday in the Ross Sports Center. The Purple Knights are 1-6 overall and 1-1 in the NE10, while the Greyhounds are 3-9 and 1-2 with this being Saint Michael's eighth straight home win against Assumption.
For the Purple Knights, sophomore Tanner Barton (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls) recorded a double-double of 10 kills and 15 digs, her first in her college career, while senior Julia Colasanti (Northville, Mich./Northville) also had 15 digs and added three of her team's 10 service aces. Junior Gabby Ratte (Kula, Hawaii/Seabury Hall/Colby-Sawyer) neared a triple-double with nine kills, 22 assists, and 12 digs while classmate Sarah Rodgers (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) added 24 assists.
Senior McKenzie McNamara (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) had a season high of 12 kills while sophomore Jordan Dean (Gilford, N.H./Gilford) also had a season high of 13 digs in addition to seven kills. Senior Megan Priester (Dover, N.H./Dover) recorded eight kills on only 17 attacks while hitting .471 and sophomore Allie Statile (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) tacked on seven kills.
Senior Olivia Burke posted 10 kills and nine blocks for Assumption as junior Kellie Smith led the team with 13 kills, adding six digs. Senior Julia Goyette pitched in nine kills while classmate Maria Chrisom had a team high of 15 digs. Senior Kiki Romanik distributed 36 assists with 10 digs and two service aces.
The Purple Knights started off the first set leading 7-2 which included kills by McNamara and Statile with the other five points coming from attack errors by the Greyhounds. After three kills and an attack error by Assumption, the visitors trailed 8-5 before Saint Michael's tallied five straight points with Priester recording two kills and Colasanti a service ace during that time. After kills from the Greyhounds' Burke and Smith, the Purple Knights put together six straight with two kills from Ratte, pushing their lead to 19-7. The Greyhounds scored three consecutive points until the teams swapped points. Ratte set up Statile for the final kill to help the Purple Knights take the first set.
The teams exchanged points early in the second set before Assumption used a 6-2 run to lead 11-8, but the Purple Knights scored the next four points to go in front. Six straight points, with two kills from Burke, put Assumption ahead 17-12 before the hosts later scored three straight points to trail 19-17. Assumption countered with three straight points before Priester turned in three kills in a 4-1 run which trimmed the deficit to two points, but the Greyhounds scored the final two points to tie the match.
Two Saint Michael's aces and five kills helped the hosts take an 11-7 lead at the beginning of the third set. After swapped points, Assumption used a 9-3 run to push ahead 20-19 on a kill from Romanik. The Purple Knights rallied to take the set with a clinching 6-2 run, as Dean recorded a kill for the final point.
After Assumption pulled ahead 8-5 in the fourth set, Barton struck three kills during a 5-0 run to help Saint Michael's lead 10-8. The Purple Knights continued to hold their lead until the Greyhounds tied it at 22-22 and then again at 23-23. The Purple and Gold's Statile finished the set with two straight kills to help the team win the fourth set and the match.
The Purple Knights travel to take on Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
