WORCESTER, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College women's volleyball team fell at Assumption College, 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-23), on Saturday at Laska Gymnasium. The Purple Knights slipped to 3-7 overall and 1-4 in the Northeast-10 Conference, playing their third match in five days after competing once in the prior 15 days. The Greyhounds improved to 3-12 and 2-5.
First-year Jordan Dean (Gilford, N.H./Gilford) matched her season high with 10 kills, connecting at a .450 clip, while adding five digs, and junior Megan Priester (Dover, N.H./Dover) had eight kills and seven digs. Classmate McKenzie McNamara (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) and sophomore Gabby Ratte (Kula, Hawaii/Seabury Hall/Colby-Sawyer) both collected five kills.
Senior Catie Weller (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) and sophomore Sarah Rodgers (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) collected 16 and 15 assists, respectively, while both adding seven digs. Senior Natalie Moore (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) led the way with 18 digs, while classmate Natalia Maccarrone (Hingham, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) and junior Julia Colasanti (Northville, Mich./Northville) tacked on nine and seven digs, respectively.
Sophomore Kellie Smith had 12 kills and 17 digs for Assumption, and junior Olivia Burke added 11 kills and five blocks. Classmate Kiki Romanik dished out 37 assists, and junior Maria Chrisom had 17 digs.
In the opening set, Assumption scored five straight points thanks to two blocks from Burke and two aces by junior Julia Goyette to take a 7-2 lead, and the Greyhounds later pulled away with a 14-4 run. The second set again saw the hosts lead 7-2 and eventually extend the advantage to 20-13 before Saint Michael's rallied with a 4-0 run, creating the first of three three-point deficits. McNamara's block made it 24-21, but Burke's kill clinched the set win.
Set No. 3 featured three early ties before the Purple Knights began pulling away with a 7-2 run, employing kills from six different players. A 3-0 Assumption stretch made it 13-11, but Saint Michael's led again by as much as 18-13 and still was ahead 22-20 on a service error. After two straight errors knotted the set, an attack error by the Greyhounds left the visitors up 23-22, but a tying Goyette kill was followed by a pair of errors to end the match.
Saint Michael's returns home to face Saint Anselm College on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
