COLCHESTER, Vt. - Andy Mink, a veteran volleyball coach and athlete in Upstate New York, has been named head coach of the Saint Michael's College women's volleyball program, Director of Athletics Geri Knortz announced on Wednesday. Mink replaces Chris Kilmer, who posted 32 wins over three years as the head coach after serving the previous three falls as an assistant coach with the Purple Knights. He returns to his alma mater, Plymouth State University, to become the women's volleyball head coach.
"Working as the head coach of a varsity program will give me an opportunity to fully implement all of the skills, traits, and experiences that make up my vast career in volleyball," said Mink, who enters his first season as a varsity head coach but provides a wealth of college club experience. "I hope to bring energy, effort, and enthusiasm to my brand new program."
Mink was a women's assistant coach in 2010 at Division III State University of New York at Plattsburgh and is also the owner, director and a coach of the New York-based Northern Impact Volleyball Club. He previously guided the Siena College men's volleyball club team during the 2009-10 school year after serving as the head coach of both the men's and women's club teams at the State University of New York at Oswego between 2007 and 2009. During that time, Mink was also president of the men's club team while playing for the squad.
"Andy comes to us with more than 10 years of volleyball experience through playing, coaching, and officiating at all different levels," said Knortz. "In addition, he has completed the national accreditation courses for volleyball, a testament to his knowledge and commitment to the sport. We are pleased to welcome him to our staff."
In addition to gaining experience for two years as a USA Volleyball High Performance clinician, Mink has earned three coaching accreditations from USA Volleyball, including completing the Coaching Accreditation Program (CAP) Level II program. He was previously a junior varsity boys' coach at Shaker (N.Y.) High School and a junior varsity girls' coach at Guilderland (N.Y.) Central High School and was a head coach for the 518 Volleyball Club, which won regional championships at various age levels for three consecutive years during his tenure. Mink also coached girls through the Legion Volleyball Club in Albany and has worked as a camp instructor for the New York YMCA Camp's World Volleyball Training Center.
Mink has remained active on the playing circuit, both in indoor and outdoor settings and at the national USA Volleyball Adult Open Championships. He finished as high as ninth at the 2009 tournament in Minneapolis. In 2005, Mink competed in the USA Volleyball Junior Olympic Volleyball Championships.
A 2009 graduate of SUNY Oswego with a degree in technical education, Mink is currently pursuing his master's from SUNY Plattsburgh in leadership. He earned an associate's degree in individual studies from Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, N.Y., in 2006.
