Volleyball Drops Matches To Saint Rose And New York Tech

ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose won both of its matches with a 3-1 (30-15, 24-30, 30-20, 30-28) victory over Northeast-10 Conference rival Saint Michael's and a 3-2 (30-26, 14-30, 24-30, 30-28, 15-11) come-from-behind win against NYIT this afternoon at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. In the process, ninth-year head coach Brian Goodale picked up his 150th career win at the helm of the Golden Knights (8-2/1-1 NE-10) who have now won four straight.

Saint Rose, down 2-1 in games, trailed NYIT 17-10 in the fourth set before rallying by scoring 20 of the game's final 31 points to deadlock the match at 2-2. The Golden Knights then took the final game 15-11 to secure the victory in a rematch of last year's NCAA Northeast Regional quarterfinal that Saint Rose won 3-1.

Senior middle hitter Michaela Jorgensen (Candor, NY/Candor) had nine kills and 11 digs, while senior outside hitter Stephanie Brink (Port Ewen, NY/Kingston) and sophomore rightside hitter Jaclyn Griffin (Glen Mills, PA/Penncrest) finished with 11 and 10 kills respectively for Saint Rose. Junior setter Jessica Weaver (Dolgeville, NY/Dolgeville) handed out 40 assists and sophomore libero Mary German (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) came up with 21 digs on the backline.

Junior outside Zeynep Isik (Izmir, Turkey/Atakent) had 15 kills and 19 digs and junior middle hitter Dena McKinney (Fishkill, NY/John Jay) added 14 kills for the Bears (3-5).

Saint Rose split the first games in its early match with Saint Michael's (3-4), but rebounded from an 11-10 deficit in game-three to win it 30-20. The Golden Knights then squeaked out a 30-28 victory in the fourth and deciding set.

Brink had 11 kills and three blocks and sophomore middle hitter Alyssa Broccoli (Middletown, NY/Pine Bush) finished with 10 kills and a pair of blocks for the Golden Knights. Weaver registered a "double-double" behind 42 assists and 12 digs, while German came up with a team-high 22 digs.

Senior rightside hitter Leslie Herwig (Kingston, NY/Kingston) had seven kills and junior libero Stephanie Smetana (Independence, MO/Truman) had 21 digs for the Purple Knights.

In the day's final match, NYIT swept Saint Michael's 3-0 (30-7, 32-30, 30-19). Sophomore outside hitter Shelby Klein (Orange, CA/El Modena) had 14 kills and five aces and McKinney put away 13 kills to pace NYIT. Freshman middle hitter Lindsey Frazier (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) had 11 kills in her homecoming while Smetana came up with 20 digs for Saint Michael's.

The Golden Knights will travel to Bridgeport for a 7:00 pm non-conference match on Monday. Saint Michael's travel to Middlebury College for a 7:00 pm non-league tilt on Tuesday, while NYIT heads to Merrimack for a 7:00 pm date on Friday in North Andover, MA.
