OCEANSIDE, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College women's tennis team completed a two-match road weekend with a 9-0 loss to regionally-ranked Adelphi University on Sunday at Point Set Indoor Racquet Club. The Purple Knights are 4-8 overall and 3-7 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Panthers, who sit fifth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region poll, moved to 10-1 and 9-1. Adelphi won the past two NE10 Championships while also qualifying for the NCAA Tournament both seasons.
Junior Margaret de Pont (Norton, Mass./Bishop Feehan) and sophomore Abby Ramsay (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) lost by an 8-2 count at No. 1 doubles to the fourth-ranked duo in the region, taking the most games from the Panther tandem in three matches, as the Adelphi team had lost as many games only once in its prior five outings. Senior Amelia Weeks (Clinton, Wash./South Whidbey)/sophomore Caroline Sumner (Needham, Mass./Needham) and senior Melissa Hickox (Laurel, N.Y./Mattituck)/sophomore Anna Schneider (Westbrook, Conn./Westbrook) both won one game from the second and third positions, respectively.
Schneider captured three games during a pro-set loss at No. 6 singles, while de Pont took two games from the 16th-ranked singles player in the region at No. 1. First-year Melissa Wood (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) also won a pair of games during her contest in the second spot while appearing higher than No. 3 for the first time.
Saint Michael's closes its home slate on Wednesday by opposing Bentley University at 3 p.m.
