COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's tennis team finished hosting three matches in a four-day stretch with a 6-3 victory against American International College during Northeast-10 Conference play at the SMC Tennis Courts Tuesday afternoon. The Purple Knights improved to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the league. The Yellow Jackets are 0-6 and 0-4.
In the No. 3 doubles slot, senior Melissa Hickox (Laurel, N.Y./Mattituck) and sophomore Anna Schneider (Westbrook, Conn./Westbrook) swept the Yellow Jackets, 8-0, while senior Amelia Weeks (Clinton, Wash./South Whidbey) and sophomore Caroline Sumner (Needham, Mass./Needham) dealt the same at No. 2. Junior Margaret de Pont (Norton, Mass./Bishop Feehan) and sophomore Abby Ramsay (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) came close with a 9-7 loss in the top spot. The Purple Knights were up 2-1 after doubles play.
First-year Melissa Wood (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) registered a 6-1, 6-3 No. 3 singles win while Weeks won by a 6-0, 6-1 count in the fourth spot. Junior Katie Costa (Old Saybrook, Conn./Old Saybrook Senior) and Sumner double-bageled their opponents at No. 5 and 6, respectively, to earn the Purple Knights a 6-3 victory. In her second career No. 1 singles match, de Pont lost a tight opening set before falling by a 6-4, 6-1 count.
Saint Michael's heads to regionally-ranked Assumption College on Saturday for an 11 a.m. match. The Greyhounds are 10th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region rankings.
