Women's Tennis Blanks SUNY Plattsburgh, All Eight Purple Knights Earn Victories

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College women's tennis team picked up its first win of the season by blanking the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, 9-0, on Wednesday at Memorial Tennis Courts. All eight Purple Knights earned at least one win, as their team improved to 1-2, while the Cardinals slipped to 2-3.

Junior Margaret de Pont (Norton, Mass./Bishop Feehan) and sophomore Abby Ramsay (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) sided for the most decisive doubles victory on the day, by an 8-1 decision in the top spot, while senior Amelia Weeks (Clinton, Wash./South Whidbey) and sophomore Caroline Sumner (Needham, Mass./Needham) earned an 8-2 win at No. 2. In the third position, junior Katie Costa (Old Saybrook, Conn./Old Saybrook Senior) and sophomore Anna Schneider (Westbrook, Conn./Westbrook) forged a 9-7 victory.

Weeks claimed a 6-4, 7-5 triumph at No. 4 singles to finish off the sweep, while the Purple Knights yielded only 11 other games across the remaining five singles matches. De Pont and Sumner shut out their foes at No. 2 and 5, respectively, while first-year Melissa Wood (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) won 6-1, 6-2 in the third spot. Senior Melissa Hickox (Laurel, N.Y./Mattituck) picked up a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 6, and Ramsay rounded out the winners by a 6-3, 6-2 count in the top slot.

Saint Michael's hosts three matches in a four-day stretch that begins on Saturday, when it takes on Franklin Pierce University at 12 p.m.
