Purple Knights snap three-match skid, finish Florida Trip on high note

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Saint Michael's College women's tennis team wrapped up its Florida Spring Break trip with a 5-4 triumph over the State University of New York at Plattsburgh on Friday at the Fort Gatlin Recreation Complex. The Purple Knights improve to 8-4 after snapping a three-match skid, while the Cardinals fall to 7-8.

Saint Michael's nearly swept through the doubles matches. Senior Emily Ogilvy (Bedford, N.H./Trinity) and freshman Caroline Toutoungi (Weston, Conn./Weston) stood in the second slot and claimed an 8-2 victory, while freshmen Kayla Dowd (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) and Michelle Moreau (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) grabbed an 8-6 win at No. 3. Junior Jean-Marie McGrath (Niwot, Colo./Alexander Dawson School) and freshman Caroline Martin (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) were the only Purple Knights to lose, falling by an 8-5 count at the No. 1 position.

Two of the Purple Knights' three singles victories were in comeback fashion, while just one of their losses was in straight sets. Junior Alex Dalton (South Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) held down the second position and won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, while Toutoungi came from behind, nabbing a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 4. Dowd followed suit in the fifth spot, claiming a 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 win.

Junior Emily Magee (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) grabbed the first set of her match at the top spot before ultimately falling, 2-6, 6-4, 6-0. Moreau dropped the initial set at No. 6 before collecting a 6-1 victory but trailing in the third set, 3-0, before retiring due to illness.

The Purple Knights return to action on March 24 when they host Northeast-10 Conference counterpart Adelphi University at 10 a.m.
