RINDGE, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College women's tennis team finished its fall slate on Sunday, rallying past Franklin Pierce University for a 7-2 victory during Northeast-10 Conference play. The Purple Knights, who competed this fall without three 2011 NE-10 All-Conference players who were studying abroad, moved to 5-1 overall and 5-0 in the league. The Ravens are 1-5 and 1-4.
Saint Michael's, which recognized National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by incorporating pink into its uniforms, lost a pair of close doubles decisions to trail 2-1 heading into singles. Freshmen Hannah Benoit (Mystic, Conn./Saint Bernard School) and Caroline Martin (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) earned an 8-1 win at No. 2 for the Purple Knights' lone victory.
In the first position, senior Emily Ogilvy (Bedford, N.H./Trinity) and freshman Caroline Toutoungi (Weston, Conn./Weston) slipped by a 9-8 count, dropping the tie-breaker just 9-7. In the third slot, freshmen Kayla Dowd (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) and Michelle Moreau (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) came up shy, 8-5.
The visitors won all six singles matches to come back and pull away, with neither Ogilvy nor Benoit dropping a game during wins at No. 3 and 4, respectively. Toutoungi grabbed a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at No. 2, and Dowd earned a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 victory in the sixth spot. Martin collected a 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 6-3 win at No. 1, while Moreau rallied in the fifth position to capture a 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 decision.
Saint Michael's will play twice in February, returning to action next at American International College on Feb. 18 at 1:30 p.m.
