Women's Tennis Wins, Men Fall In Doubleheader With Saint Anselm

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College tennis teams split a pair of matches with Saint Anselm College on Saturday on the Saint Michael's outdoor courts. In the opener, the Saint Michael's women (5-1, 5-1 NE-10) bested Saint Anselm, 8-1, and in the nightcap, the Saint Michael's men (0-1, 0-1 NE-10) opened their season with a 6-3 loss to the Hawks.

In the first match, the Saint Michael's women swept the six singles matches to earn the lopsided win. Junior Marran Ranks (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) and freshman Jean-Marie McGrath (Niwot, Colo./Alexander Dawson School) led the way for the Purple Knights, as they both earned straight-set singles victories, and partnered for an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles. Senior Jackie Smullen (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) also won twice, at No. 6 singles and at No. 3 doubles while teaming with sophomore Emily Ogilvy (Bedford, N.H./Trinity). Junior Marybeth Ash (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) and freshmen Emily Magee (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) and Alexandra Dalton (South Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) completed the singles sweep for Saint Michael's, winning at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 singles, respectively.

For Saint Anselm (0-1, 0-1 NE-10), senior Ginny Dalrymple (Surry, Maine) and freshman Amanda Lawrence (North Scituate, R.I.) recorded the Hawks' lone win at No. 1 doubles.

In the men;s contest, Saint Anselm (1-0, 1-0 NE-10) took advantage of just five eligible players for the Purple Knights, as the Hawks won their season opener. Freshman William Condon (Mansfield, Mass.) led the way for Saint Anselm, as he earned wins at No. 5 singles and No. 1 doubles to pace the visitors.

For Saint Michael's, sophomore Brian Healey (Ware, Mass./Belchertown) won at No. 2 singles, and No. 2 doubles while pairing with junior Ryan Magee (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury). Senior Craig Lindabery (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills Regional) earned the other win for the Purple Knights at No. 1 singles.

Saint Michael's resumes its men;s and women;s tennis seasons in March.
