Greg Cluff, the second-winningest coach in the history of the Saint Michael's women's tennis program and the 2007-08 Northeast-10 Conference Coach of the Year, enters his seventh season as head coach in 2009-10. He has compiled a 74-38 through six seasons, with each squad finishing at least two games above .500.
In 2008-09, Cluff guided the Purple Knights to a 14-7 record, and helped the program reach the NCAA Division II Tournament for the second straight season. Saint Michael's advanced to the NE-10 Semifinals for the sixth consecutive season.
In 2007-08, Cluff led the team to a 15-7 season, the most wins in program history. The team finished second in the NE-10 with a 10-2 record, and advanced to the NE-10 Championship. The program also earned its first-ever trip to the NCAA Division II Tournament. For his efforts, Cluff was named the Saint Michael's 2007-08 Coach of the Year on May 1.
In 2006-07, Cluff led the Purple Knights to a 14-7 record, at the time the most victories in program history. Saint Michael's earned a share of the Northeast-10 Conference regular-season title and the No. 1 seed in the NE-10 Tournament, advancing to the championship match. Cluff's squad also earned the NE-10 Sportsmanship Award for women's tennis in 2006-07.
In 2005-06, Cluff guided Saint Michael's to an 11-9 record, the program's ninth-straight winning season and tied for the fifth-most victories in program history. The Purple Knights also went 8-4 in NE-10 play, advancing to the NE-10 Semifinals.
In 2004-05, Cluff led the Purple Knights to an 11-4 record. Saint Michael's advanced to the NE-10 Semifinals before falling to eventual champion Bryant. For his efforts, Cluff was named the Saint Michael's 2004-05 Coach of the Year on May 5.
In 2004, his first season, Cluff guided the Purple Knights to a 9-4 record, the most victories in program history by a first-year head coach.
Cluff spent the previous three seasons (2000-02) as the team's assistant coach, helping the squad compile a 36-9 record during that span, including an undefeated regular season in 2001.
Cluff has extensive coaching experience in the greater Burlington area. He has spent more than 30 years (1969-81, 1990-present) as the boy's tennis coach at Champlain Valley Union High School in Hinesburg, where he served as a social studies teacher for 38 years. Cluff has led the team to four state championships (1977-78, 1999-2000) and eight finals appearances under his tutelage, including six consecutive finals berths from 1997-2002.
In addition to his high school and college coaching experience, Cluff has also taught tennis for many summers. Since 2002, he has been a tutor for the Town of Shelburne Recreation Tennis Program, and from 1991-95 worked at the Burlington Tennis Club.
Cluff also is the College's coordinator of athletics admissions, helping recruiting efforts between admissions and athletics. He has served in this part-time capacity since the summer of 2008.
