MANCHESTER, N.H. - Junior Megan LeCours (Barre, Vt./Spaulding) made 11 saves to earn her third shutout of the year, helping the Saint Michael's College women's soccer team play to a scoreless draw with Saint Anselm College in Melucci Field on Wednesday. The Purple Knights moved to 3-6-2 overall and 2-6-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Hawks are 4-6-1 and 2-6-1.
LeCours matched her season high in saves while coming within one of a career high, helping Saint Michael's play a 0-0 contest with Saint Anselm for the third time in the last seven NE10 meetings. LeCours has reached double digits in saves four times this season, already the most since Tara McCuin '04 had six such contests in 2000. Each of the Purple and Gold's last three 0-0 NE10 games have now come against the Hawks. Junior Elise Bouchard notched three stops for the hosts.
The visitors held a 3-1 edge in shots during the first overtime, including as senior Abby Pelon (South Lyon, Mich./Ladywood) tipped a bouncing cross wide left during the 91st minute from deep in the box. LeCours stonewalled junior Corey Murray from close range in the 96th minute after the Hawk took a cross that went post to post, and first-year Sam Faust (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) had a golden opportunity to end the game in the 99th minute, drawing Bouchard off her line in the left portion of the box before a handful of Saint Anselm defenders recovered to block a shot on the open net.
All five second-overtime attempts came from Hawks, including as Murray sent a shot from outside the box just wide of the left post in the 105th minute. LeCours came up with another game-saving stop in the 107th minute, diving to her right on the goal line to deny first-year Nicole Scarfo's close-range shot during a corner kick set. That proved to be the final attempt by either team.
LeCours picked up nine of her saves in regulation, including six during the second half. LeCours was tested less than two minutes in, turning aside sophomore Roshelle Morrison's try at 1:29 before a follow-up bid went wide. A 15th-minute corner sequence for the Hawks included a blocked shot and first-year Suzanne Cotter pushing a second attempt wide, while first-year Taryn Manna (Shirley, Mass./Home Schooled) had a shot stopped in the 28th minute.
LeCours kept it scoreless in the 68th minute, stopping sophomore back Delaney Bartol's shot off a corner play. Cotter's blocked shot led to another corner in the 76th minute, when LeCours rejected first-year back Erin Paquette's header bid. Sophomore Brett Matzke (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) saw her attempt denied in the 86th minute by Bouchard, sending the teams to overtime.
Saint Michael's visits No. 21 Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Penmen's national ranking is according to the United Soccer Coaches, as they also stand second in the East Region poll.
