WALTHAM, Mass. - Senior Abby Pelon (South Lyon, Mich./Ladywood) netted two goals as the Saint Michael's College women's soccer team defeated Bentley University, 3-0, on Saturday. The Purple Knights improved to 3-3-1 overall and 2-3 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Falcons are now 4-4 and 2-4. Saint Michael's had last won at Bentley on Oct. 23, 2005, and earned just its third road victory in 14 all-time meetings.
Pelon recorded her first career multi-goal game while junior Emily Durette (Nashua, N.H./Nashua South) posted her first goal of the season. Sophomore Brett Matzke (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) and first-year Taryn Manna (Shirley, Mass./Home Schooled) each added an assist. Junior Megan LeCours (Barre, Vt./Spaulding) nailed down the shutout for the Purple Knights with 11 saves. Senior Deirdre Macrorie picked up one save in net for the Falcons.
Early in the first half at 7:23, Manna fed a clean pass to Pelon, who sailed a shot from 25 yards out just inside the near post. Pelon struck again 6:16 later at 13:39. Matzke chipped a pass over the defense, allowing Pelon to get to the ball before the Falcon keeper and hit a shot from 12 yards out, making it 2-0. The Falcons' best opportunities in the remainder of the half came at 19:36 and 41:01 with LeCours saving the first shot before the second hit the post.
The Falcons struck nine shots on goal against LeCours in the second half, but she saved them all. Durette's goal came during the 87th minute as she converted a turnover within the 18-yard box to hit a low shot to the far post.
