COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's soccer team (4-11-2, 3-9-2 NE-10) faced a 1-0 setback against the University of New Haven Chargers (10-6-3, 7-6-2 NE-10) Saturday on Duffy Field. The Purple Knights celebrated their senior day, recognizing senior Alicia Baxter as the sole representative of the class of 2010 on the team.
Both teams battled neck and neck in the cold, rainy weather through 90 minutes of play, resulting in a 0-0 tie at the end of regulation time. The Chargers outshot the Purple Knights seven to five, but neither team was able to find the back of the net.
The Chargers were successful on the one and only shot taken in overtime, with sophomore Alexa DellaRocca (Hamden, Conn./Hamden Hall Country Day) scoring the game-winning goal with 3:21 left on the clock.
Chargers sophomore Kim Taylor (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) made three saves to earn the shutout. Purple Knights sophomore Ashleigh Adams (Milton, Vt./Milton) stopped one shot in the first half before being subbed by sophomore Brittany Cocozza (Cranston, R.I./East Greenwich/Saint John's) who stopped two shots in the remainder of the game.
The Purple Knights will take their place on Duffy Field for the final time on Wednesday. They will host the Stonehill College Skyhawks at 3 p.m. in their last Northeast-10 Conference game of the season.
