COLCHESTER, Vt. - It was a battle of the mascots on Duffy Field on Wednesday as Saint Michael's College Purple Knights (1-3-0) faced off against the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights (3-0-2). After bringing the game into the second overtime, Bridgeport found the back of the net, ending the game on a golden goal, 2-1.
Bridgeport took the lead with just over ten minutes remaining in the first half when junior Elin Svavarsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland) got a shot off on a fumbled play in front of the net.
Midway through the second half, sophomore Teal Bryan (North Yarmouth, Maine) scored the tying goal on a pass from junior Jenn Senecal (Yarmouth, Maine). With the game tied 1-1 and the clock running down, the intensity on the field picked up as both teams battled to the end of the buzzer and prepared for overtime.
In the first overtime, neither team was able to capitalize on any scoring chances or set piece opportunities. Four minutes into the second overtime, Bridgeport found their opportunity on a breakaway when senior Sofia Hoflin (Ostersund, Sweden) found freshman Asia Pulse (New Haven, Conn.) for the golden goal to end the game.
Saint Michael's sophomore Ashleigh Adams (Milton, Vt.) recorded seven saves in the game, while Bridgeport's goalie junior Emelie Karstrom (Everod, Sweden) had five saves.
