COLCHESTER, Vt. - A trio of Saint Michael's College women's soccer sophomores raised money for Special Olympics Vermont on Saturday, February 7, by taking part in the 14th Annual Burlington (Vt.) Penguin Plunge. From left (in purple hats), Jessica Valley (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex), Liz Freiberger (South Walpole, Mass./Walpole) and Katie Murphy (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity Regional) jumped into the frigid waters of Lake Champlain. The trio raised more than $500 for Special Olympics Vermont, and were three of an estimated crowd of more than 1,000 participants who plunged into the lake to benefit the organization. | |
| In 2008, the Penguin Plunge raised
$358,000 to help Special Olympics athletes throughout the state,
serving as the organization's biggest fundraiser.
In addition to the plunge in Burlington, the Penguin Plunge also took place in North Bennington, Vt., on January 31, and will take place in Newport, Vt., on February 14.
