Women's Lacrosse Falls To Fifth-Ranked Stonehill, 17-5

COLCHESTER, Vt.- Facing the second top-ten opponent in as many games, the Saint Michael's College women's lacrosse team (7-6, 5-4 NE-10) surrendered a 7-0 lead less than 13 minutes in to No. 5 and Northeast-10 Conference Regular Season Champion Stonehill College (12-2, 10-0 NE-10) and could not recover, falling 17-5. Senior goalkeeper Courtney Wakem (Tiverton, R.I./Tiverton) tallied double-digit saves in her second straight game, blocking 12 on the afternoon, including seven in the first half.

Aiding Stonehill's offensive onslaught in the first half were senior Kristin Darrell (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and sophomore Liza Gross (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker), who each netted five goals on the afternoon. The sharp-shooter Darrell, who tallied an assist as well, did not miss on all five attempts, including three in the first half.

Junior midfielder Michelle Kelly (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) helped provide a 10-2 first half cushion with three goals and three assists to improve her team-best goal tally to 51 on the season. Senior goalkeeper Amanda McGeachy (Saco, Maine/Thornton Acad.) was tested rarely in the first half, but registered five saves in the game, all in the second half.

Saint Michaels' senior Brynne Curran (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) and junior Kim Berlo (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) each tallied a pair of goals and an assist for the Purple Knights, both with a free-position goal. Curran, tallying her 54th goal of the year, is six goals shy of tying the program record with one game remaining. That game happens to be at Southern Connecticut, a team the senior notched six scores against in the season opener in Florida on March 16.

The Purple Knights head to New Haven, Connecticut to face off with the Owls at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 26 for the regular season finale.
