COLCHESTER, Vt. ? The Saint Michael's College women's lacrosse team (5-3, 4-1 Northeast-10 Conference) won its fourth straight game on Thursday, besting Saint Anselm College, 18-13, in league action on Duffy Field at Doc Jacobs Complex.
For the Purple Knights, sophomore Brynne Curran (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) netted a team-high five goals and added an assist, while junior Amanda Soule (Hartland, Vt./Woodstock Union) recorded four goals. Senior Megan Lagasse (Newburyport, Mass./Governor Dummer Academy) chipped in with three goals and an assist, while sophomores Kim Berlo (Scituate, Mass./Scituate), Amanda Pelley (Mashpee, Mass./Falmouth) and Lauren Rizzotti (Rockland, Mass./Cohasset) each scored twice, with Pelley adding three assists. Freshman Sarah Landis (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) made four second-half saves to earn the win as the Purple Knights improved to 3-0 at home this season, and have scored a combined 84 goals during their four-game winning streak.
For Saint Anselm (4-3, 1-2 NE-10), sophomore Kelsey Johnson (Byfield, Mass.) netted five goals and an assist, while senior Lauren Glancy (Scituate, Mass.) added three goals. Senior Colleen Sheehan (North Andover, Mass.) and junior Beth Millian (Arlington, Mass.) also scored twice for the Hawks, while freshman Alexandra DiRico (Royersford, Pa.) turned aside 12 shots in defeat.
The Purple Knights raced out to an 11-4 lead late in the first half, but the Hawks scored twice in the final minute of the opening period to pull to within 11-6 at intermission. Saint Anselm carried that momentum into the second half, as the Hawks scored the first three goals after halftime to cut their deficit to 11-9 with 24 minutes remaining. However, Lagasse's second goal of the contest, followed by a pair of Curran tallies (the second of which proved to be the game-winner), pushed Saint Michael's advantage up to 14-9, and the Hawks never got closer than three goals for the remainder of the contest.
Saint Michael's returns to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. contest at league-rival Bryant University, while Saint Anselm is scheduled to host conference-foe Merrimack College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
