COLCHESTER, Vt. ? The Saint Michael's College women's lacrosse team defeated the University of New Haven, 19-10, on Senior Day at Duffy Field on Sunday afternoon. Junior assistant captain Amanda Soule (Hartland, Vt./Woodstock Union) led the way scoring five goals, while senior captains Megan Rule (Bow, N.H./Bow) and Megan Lagasse (Newburyport, Mass./Gov. Dummer Academy) netted four goals apiece and Rule also added three assists for a seven-point game.
For the Chargers (6-8, 1-2 ECC), sophomores Brigid Brady (Islip Terrrace, N.Y.) and Brianna Kenworthy (Holden, Mass./Wachusett) tallied three goals apiece, while freshman Sarah LeGoff (Manorville, N.Y.) added two goals and an assist. Freshman Traci Cornwell (Albany, N.Y.) recorded a goal and three assists for New Haven and sophomore Alison Wagner (Collingswood, N.J.) made 10 saves in net, including seven in the second half.
For the Purple Knights (6-6, 5-4 NE-10), junior Brynne Curran (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) collected four goals and an assist for five points and junior Christine Driscoll (Belmont, Mass./Newton Country Day) added her first goal of the season and an assist. Sophomore Lauren Rizzotti (Rockland, Mass./Cohasset) and junior Lila McCormack (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) rounded out the scoring for Saint Michael's with a goal each. Junior Courtney Wakem (Tiverton, R.I./Tiverton) made four saves, all in the second half, to earn her fourth victory of the season.
New Haven got on the board first, just a 1:39 into the contest on a goal by Kenworthy, but Saint Michael's answered back with goals from Rule and Lagasse to put the Purple Knights on top 2-1. LeGoff tied it up a minute later, and then Lagasse and Rizzotti gave the Purple Knights their largest lead at 5-2 with 20 minutes remaining in the half.
The Chargers cut the deficit down to one with back-to-back goals from Brady, but Saint Michael's outscored New Haven 5-1 to close out the half and take a 9-5 lead into halftime.
Saint Michael's came out firing in the second half and built up their largest lead at 16-7, outscoring New Haven 7-2 in the first 22 minutes of the half, highlighted by three tallies for Soule. The teams then traded goals down the stretch and Curran closed out the scoring with 23 seconds remaining as the Purple Knights defeated the Chargers 19-10.
Saint Michael's out-shot New Haven 38-17 in the game and the Purple Knights honored their three graduating seniors, Rule, Lagasse and Julianne Ireland (Franconia, N.H./White Mountain School), before the game.
For the Purple Knights, they finish their season with a 7-7 overall record and a 5-5 mark in conference play.
