Curran Leads Purple Knights Past SCSU 21-8

COLCHESTER, Vt. ? Sophomore Brynne Curran (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) lifted the Saint Michael's College women's lacrosse team past Southern Connecticut State University, 21-8, with a career-high 10 points earning eight goals and two assists. She fell two points shy of the all-time record for points in a game, which is 12 and was posted in 2002 against Southern Connecticut.

For the Purple Knights (4-3, 3-1 NE-10), senior tri-captain Megan Lagasse (Newburyport, Mass./Governor Dummer Academy) netted four goals and added two assists for six points, while junior Amanda Soule (Hartland, Vt./Woodstock Union) scored a pair of goals and handed out two assists. Freshman Madeleine Cave (Thomaston, Maine/Gould Academy) recorded her first two-goal game of her career coming off the bench for Saint Michael's. Classmate Sarah Landis (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) stopped eight shots in net, including seven in the second half, to earn her second victory of the season.

For the Owls (1-4, 1-3 NE-10), junior Allison Kownacki (Orange, Conn.) scored a team-high four goals, with two coming on a free-position shot. Senior Allison Ahearn (Farmingville, N.Y.) and freshman Teresa Monfredo (Shirley, N.Y.) each tallied two goals in the defeat for Southern Connecticut, while freshman goaltender Lisa Corso (North Bellmore, N.Y.) made 12 saves in net, including nine in the first half.

Curran got the Purple Knights off to a fast start with a natural hat trick in the first five minutes of play. Saint Michael's scored the first eight goals before Kownacki got the Owls on the board with 17:46 remaining in the first half.

Over the final 18 minutes of the first half, Southern Connecticut traded goals with the Purple Knights as Kownacki added her second and Monfredo scored with 4:33 left, but Saint Michael's continued to dominate with goals by Cave, Curran, Lagasse and freshman Kayla Sibilia (Hampden, Mass./Minnechaug Regional).

In the second half, the Purple Knights out-scored the Owls 9-4, highlighted by Curran's four goals. Sophomore Amanda Pelley (Mashpee, Mass./Falmouth) added her first of the game 27 seconds into the half and Lagasse posted her fourth and final goal to increase the lead to 14-3 early in the half. Southern Connecticut cut the lead to nine after back-to-back goals by Kownacki and Monfredo, but Saint Michael's closed out the game with five-straight goals.

The Purple Knights will be back in action this coming Thursday, April 5, at 4 p.m. as they play host to NE-10 foe Saint Anselm at Duffy Field. For more information on women's lacrosse, visit our website at www.smcathletics.com.
