COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey senior Nicole Talcott (Colchester, Vt./Rice Memorial Prep) and junior Vika Simons (Essex Junction, Vt./Minnesota Duluth Club) both landed spots on the New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) Weekly Honor Roll for the week ending Sunday, Jan. 27. This is the fourth time this season that Simons has been recognized by the NEWHA and the third time for Talcott.
Talcott made 40 saves during a 3-0 loss on Saturday to Franklin Pierce University, which is 10th in NCAA Division I/II in scoring. Talcott and the Purple Knights held the Ravens, who were just outside the national top 10 in power-play percentage, scoreless on six woman advantages while yielding just one goal outside a two-goal spurt in a 3:38 span early in the second period. Talcott is sporting career bests in goals-against average (3.17) and save percentage (.910) and is fourth in the NEWHA in both categories.
Simons made 41 saves during a 3-0 loss on Friday to Franklin Pierce. She turned in 32 saves in the opening two periods alone, when the Ravens scored only twice in one 2:41 stretch late in the first period, which included one power-play goal. Simons held Franklin Pierce to one goal in the final 41 minutes. In her first collegiate season, Simons has a .903 save percentage, which is fifth in the NEWHA, and is averaging 32.5 saves.
The Purple Knights are now 4-12-1 overall and 2-7-1 in the NEWHA and go on the road this weekend for two league games against first-place Saint Anselm College, with Friday's game starting at 4 p.m. and Saturday's at 1 p.m.
