SHELTON, Conn. - The Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team registered a 7-1 victory over Post University on Friday evening at the Sports Center of Connecticut. The Purple Knights improved to 4-19 while the Eagles are now 2-23-2. The teams play again tomorrow at 2:15 p.m.
First-year Emily Lanci (Canton, Mass./Lawrence Academy) registered her first two collegiate goals for the Purple Knights while adding an assist and a 7-for-12 effort on faceoffs. Classmate Megan Doherty (Stoughton, Mass./Walpole Express) had a goal and an assist, while first-year Courtney Kelly (Arlington, Mass./Boston Jr. Shamrocks) tallied a goal and an assist, scoring for the first time as a collegian.
Senior Kaitlyn Wurzer (Lee, N.H./Berwick Academy), sophomore Arianna Boscia (Cranston, R.I./La Salle Academy) and first-year Riley Nichols (Gilford, N.H./Tilton School) also scored, and junior Brenna Galvin (Dorchester, Mass./Boston Latin School) handed out three assists. Nichols' goal was the first of her college career, and Wurzer went 9-for-14 on faceoffs. Junior Nicole Talcott (Colchester, Vt./Rice Memorial Prep) had 22 saves to push her season total to 694, passing Abby Burke '17 (675) and Alysia Goldman '11 (689) for fourth in program history.
First-year Gwendolyn Lansky recorded the lone goal for the Eagles as classmate Ann Margaret Disciscio was 12-for-19 from the dot. Sophomore Jenna Baumgartner notched 48 saves.
The Purple Knights started the opening period with the first eight shots on net, including two apiece from Boscia and first-year Krista Ferrari (Dunstable, Mass./East Coast Wizards), but Baumgartner saved them all. In between, sophomore Alissa Sullivan (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) blocked back-to-back tries from sophomore Kendall Fitzgerald. During two Saint Michael's power-play opportunities that started at at 5:55 and 8:41, the Purple Knights struck Baumgartner with four shots as she allowed none through. A little after the 12-minute mark, Talcott denied two consecutive bids from Disciscio before Boscia and Kelly made attempts on Baumgartner. The teams were scoreless following the opening 20 minutes.
Within a span of 2:26 in the second stanza the Purple Knights registered three goals. The first came from Lanci at 1:12 before Kelly and Wurzer tallied short-handed goals at 2:01 and 3:38, respectively. Lansky got the Eagles got on the board during a power-play opportunity at 6:43. The Purple Knights played two women down for a 1:24 stretch starting at 7:50, but Talcott stopped all three shots sent her way before facing no shots during an Eagle power play that started at 10:29. Boscia capitalized on a Purple Knight power play at 14:15 to push them ahead 4-1. Talcott had four saves during another scoreless Eagle power play before Lanci tallied her second goal at 19:06.
After seven Purple Knight attempts to begin the third period, Doherty tallied the team's sixth goal through the help of Galvin and Lanci at 4:45. During a Post power play that kicked off at 5:38, Talcott stopped all five shots. Saint Michael's tallied three tries in a row after the 11-minute mark that Baumgartner denied before shutting down a Purple Knight power play that started at 15:38 with two more stops. Nichols finished off the scoring at 17:52.
