WORCESTER, Mass. – The Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team finished the weekend at Division I College of the Holy Cross with a 6-0 loss Saturday afternoon at Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex. The Purple Knights are 3-15 while the Crusaders are now 11-5-2.
Junior Nicole Talcott (Colchester, Vt./Rice Memorial Prep) played 46:18 in net with 27 saves for the Purple Knights while first-year Alyssa Cimino (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) had 13 saves during 12:27 of relief. Senior Kaitlyn Wurzer (Lee, N.H./Berwick Academy) was 6-for-11 in faceoffs while first-year Maddie Gervais (Glastonbury, Conn./East Catholic) went 3-for-3. Junior Christiana Akiki (Allendale, N.J./New Jersey Rockets) blocked six shots.
Senior Emily Lissner notched two goals for the Crusaders while four other plays had a goal each. Junior Julie Matthias went 11-for-14 from the dot. During 40 minutes, first-year Julia Pelletier stopped nine shots before sophomore Marcia LaPlante closed out the game with 10 saves.
Junior Maeve Reilly recorded a goal at 3:22 for the Crusaders in the first period through the help of Matthias and sophomore Maeve Christ. Around the 14-minute mark, Gervais got a shot off that Pelletier knocked away. The Crusaders scored shorthanded at 18:13 with Lissner potting the goal.
During the first five minutes of play in the second stanza, the Purple Knights tallied the first four shots on goal, with each turned away. Senior Kelsey Goostrey tallied another goal for the Crusaders at 8:17 before Lissner netted her second of the game at 13:40. Following the goal, senior Ashley Dineen (Somers, N.Y./Canterbury School), junior Brenna Galvin (Dorchester, Mass./Boston Latin School), and first-year Emily Lanci (Canton Mass./Lawrence Academy) each had a try that Pelletier denied.
Senior Kara Violette capitalized during a power-play opportunity for the Crusaders 22 seconds into the third period to put her team ahead 5-0. Later in the period, Galvin took back-to-back shots before first-year Lizzie Blanchard (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) ripped a bid with LaPlante letting none through. First-year Allison Attea finished up the scoring at 6:04. Around the eight-minute mark, first-year Krista Ferrari (Dunstable, Mass./East Coast Wizards) and senior Amanda Donahoe (Wakefield, Mass./Saint Mary's) each had an attempt knocked away. Despite the Purple Knights having a two-minute 5-on-3 advantage beginning at 9:30, they were unable to get any by LaPlante, with one shot being saved and two getting blocked by skaters.
The Purple Knights host Franklin Pierce University for a weekend series starting Friday at 7:05 p.m.
