COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team will host its 13th annual Trader Duke's Ice Hockey Classic this weekend at Cairns Arena in South Burlington. Admission is free for the entire weekend, and the tournament is sponsored by Trader Duke's Hotel in South Burlington.
The tournament begins today when Hamilton (N.Y.) College, the 2015 champion, and Plymouth State University play at 4 p.m. The Purple Knights hit the ice at 7 p.m. to face the University of Southern Maine. Hamilton and Southern Maine play on Saturday at 1 p.m., and the hosts meet Plymouth State at 4 p.m.
The 2-10 Purple Knights suffered seven losses by three goals or less in the first semester, including a pair of one-goal setbacks. Fifteen different players have registered a point for a balanced offense, with senior Katherine O'Brien (East Sandwich, Mass./Tilton School) netting a team-best five thanks in part to a team-high-tying three goals. Classmate Ashley Dineen (Somers, N.Y./Canterbury School) also has three goals, while she, senior Kaitlyn Wurzer (Lee, N.H./Berwick Academy) and first-year Maddie Gervais (Glastonbury, Conn./East Catholic) all have four points. In her first season as the team's starting netminder, junior Nicole Talcott (Colchester, Vt./Rice Memorial Prep) has a .908 save percentage and a 3.42 goals-against average.
