Saint Michael’s wins second consecutive contest with 2-1 victory over Plymouth State
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Senior Madelena Santore (Millington, N.J./New Jersey Rockets) snapped a third-period tie to send the Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Plymouth State University on Friday in an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East contest at Hanaway Rink. The Purple Knights earned their second straight victory and improve to 3-15-1 overall and 2-12-1 in the league, while the Panthers drop to 1-14-3 and 1-10-2.
Santore and freshman Kristen Spulecki (Orchard Park, N.Y./Buffalo Bison) each tallied a goal and a helper for the Purple Knights, while junior Erin Stevens (Watertown, Conn./Connecticut Polar Bears) turned aside 21 shots, including 18 in the final two periods, yielding only a first-period power-play marker.
Sophomore Jane Baruch (Coventry, R.I./Edgewood Lady Hawks) scored the lone marker for the Panthers, while senior Nicole Provencher (Guilford, Conn./Connecticut Polar Bears) stopped 17 shots.
Plymouth State got on the board first when Baruch tallied a power-play marker at 17:28 of the first period, one of only 10 shots taken by either team in the stanza. However, Spulecki knotted the score at the 14:24 mark of the second frame after having an initial shot blocked but following the play and grabbing the rebound. Santore and senior Casey Yelton (Arnold, Md./Washington Pride) assisted.
Santore put one in the back of the net at 4:31 of the third for what proved to be the game-winner, as Stevens made nine saves during the period to preserve the one-goal lead. Spulecki and junior Darah Thomas (Amherst, Mass./UMass Boston) picked up assists on Santore's marker.
The Purple Knights travel to Gorham, Maine, on Saturday to take on the University of Southern Maine for an ECAC East contest at 1 p.m.
