SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - Senior Desiree Biron (Bow, N.H./The Gunnery School) tied a program record with four goals as the Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team (1-3-0, 1-3-0 ECAC East) earned its first victory of the season on Saturday afternoon, 10-0, against Plymouth State University (0-3-0, 0-3-0 ECAC East) in conference action at Cairns Arena.
Biron, who scored twice in the both the first and second periods, tied the program record held by Meg Lyons '05, who netted four goals in a win at Castleton State College on November 19, 2004.
The 10-goal margin of victory matched the largest in program history, and it marked Saint Michael's highest scoring output since a 10-0 win versus Plymouth on February 22, 2008. The only time Saint Michael's has scored more than 10 goals was in an 11-1 victory versus the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on February 15, 2002. The shutout was the first for Saint Michael's since a 6-0 blanking of Plymouth on January 24, 2009, a span of 12 games, and gave Saint Michael's a 7-0 advantage in the all-time series.
Also for the Purple Knights, fellow senior Crystal Sarno (Stoneham, Mass./Canterbury School) scored twice, her third and fourth goals in the last two days, as did freshman Allison Graf (Long Lake, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds), the first two goals of her collegiate career. Sophomore Kelly McDonald (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) and freshman Laura Levin (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) also scored their first collegiate goals in the win, while Graf and McDonald added an assist apiece. Junior Alysia Goldman (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Hebron Academy) turned aside 12 shots to pick up the shutout, the second of her career.
For the Panthers, sophomore Nicole Provencher (Guilford, Conn.) recorded 18 saves on 24 shots through two periods, while freshman Melissa Bourgoin (Lewiston, Maine) stopped seven of 11 third-period shots.
Biron opened the scoring for Saint Michael's with two even-strength goals in the first 10 minutes of the contest. Her opening score at the 4:14 mark was assisted by senior Molly DiMasi (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) and junior Meghan Colitti (Dover, N.H./Berwick Academy), and her second goal less than six minutes later was unassisted following a turnover.
After Sarno's first goal four minutes into the second period increased the Purple Knights' lead to 3-0, Saint Michael's broke open the contest with three goals in the final seven minutes of the frame. Biron scored a pair of unassisted goals just 13 seconds apart to give the hosts a 5-0 lead, and Sarno's second goal of the game - also unassisted - three minutes later made the score 6-0 through 40 minutes.
In the third period, Graf and McDonald tallied early in the frame to increase the lead to 8-0, and Graf and Levin netted goals late in the period to complete the scoring.
Saint Michael's, 1-1 on its program-high seven-game homestand, returns to action on Friday, as the Purple Knights host conference-rival Nichols College at 7 p.m. Plymouth will seek its first win of the season on Tuesday, as the Panthers host league-foe New England College at 6 p.m.
