BOSTON, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team (3-16-1, 1-15-1 ECAC East) allowed three power play goals in a 4-2 loss at the University of Massachusetts Boston in conference action on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Kaleigh Ferrari (Millbrook, N.Y./The Millbrook School) netted her first goal of the season in the loss. Classmate Emily Paquin (Bowie, Md./Washington Pride) also scored for Saint Michael's, while senior Sarah Landis (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) and freshman Melissa Coughlin (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) were credited with assists. Junior Alysia Goldman (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Hebron Academy) stopped 32 shots in the loss.
UMass Boston (13-7-0, 10-4-0) was led by Maria Nasta, who scored twice, and Leah Hallett, who stopped 30 shots for her 2th win of the season.
The Beacons seized control with three goals in the first 16 minutes, including two power play goals in the opening seven minutes of play. Paquin's second-period score cut the Purple Knights' deficit to 3-1, and Ferrari's goal early in the third period reduced the Beacons' lead to 3-2. However, Nasta's second goal of the game with 7:15 remaining gave UMass Boston a 4-2 advantage, and the Purple Knights couldn't rally.
Saint Michael's returns to action on February 6 and 7, as the Purple Knights complete their eight-game road trip with a two-game series at the College of the Holy Cross, with games starting at 2 p.m. both days.
