SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - In the Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team's (1-5-0, 1-5-0 ECAC East) fourth straight home contest, they fell to the Holy Cross Crusaders (6-0-0, 5-0-0 ECAC East) in a 2-0 battle on Saturday at Cairns Arena. In the 10-year history of these two teams, Saint Michael's has never succeeded in defeating the Crusaders.
The Purple Knights competed with the Crusaders throughout the first period, holding them to only eight shots on goal. Holy Cross found their scoring opportunity in the last second of the period when sophomore Nicola Garat (Princeton, N.J./Lewis) netted a puck from freshman Rebecca O'Quinn (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) to put the Crusaders on the board.
Saint Michael's held the Crusaders to a scoreless second period. Purple Knights' netminder, junior Alysia Goldman (Ballston, Lake, N.Y./Hebron Academy) was a key player in the period, stopping 16 shots on goal. Holy Cross outshot Saint Michael's 16 to eight, but the play on the ice remained very well matched and competitive.
The third period was an all-out battle for both teams, as Holy Cross needed to notch a second goal to secure a win while the Purple Knights were fighting for a goal to tie the game. The Crusaders earned the point they needed in the 10th minute of the period on a power play, as senior Katelyn Doherty (Toronto, Ontario/Birchmount Park Collegiate) netted a puck from classmate Lisa Wilson (Corunna, Ontario/Sarnia Collegiate and Technical) and Garat.
Crusader's goalie, junior Monique Gallant (Antigonish, Nova Scotia/Canterbury) had 28 saves in net, while Purple Knights' Goldman made an impressive 39 saves to keep the contest close.
The Purple Knights continue their homestand at Cairns Arena, hosting Salve Regina on Dec. 4 for a 7 p.m. face-off.
