MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Sophomores Alex Riewer (Lake Bluff, Ill.) and Kendra Andrie (Muskegon, Mich.) scored first-period goals and freshman Rebecca Simmons (Averill Park, N.Y.) made 17 saves to lead Salve Regina University to a 2-0 win over St. Michael's University in ECAC Women's Hockey action Sunday afternoon at St. George's Rink.
The Seahawks - who outshot the Purple Knights 51-17 - have now won three of their last four games to improve to 6-2 (3-2 ECAC) on the season. Sophomore Alysia Goldman (Bollston Lake, N.Y.) made 49 saves for St. Michael's, who fell to 1-6 (0-5 ECAC).
"We played well both offensively and defensively," said Salve Regina head coach Michael Cox. "We put a lot of shots on net, and we could have had at least five goals if it wasn't for their goaltender."
Riewer's second goal of the season at 7:01 of the first period put the Seahawks in front, 1-0. Senior Caitlin Campbell (Hingham, Mass.) and sophomore Gabrielle Gardner (Farmington Hills, Mich.) picked up assists on the goal.
Salve Regina grabbed a 2-0 lead with just one second remaining in the first period as Andrie converted a pass from sophomore Danika Williams (Fairbanks, Alaska) into her third goal of the season. Sophomore Kristen Cokely (Cambridge, Mass.) also picked up an assist on the goal.
"Kendra's goal was a great lift for us heading into the locker room," said Cox. "The goal really seemed to give our team a lift. She's been playing well for us."
The Seahawks finished the afternoon 0-for-8 on the power-play while the Purple Knights failed in their only chance with the man advantage.
