Purple Knights fall to Southern New Hampshire in season finale
MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College women's basketball team ended its season with a 70-58 loss at Southern New Hampshire University in a Northeast-10 Conference tilt on Tuesday at the SNHU Fieldhouse. The Purple Knights finish their season 10-16 overall and 8-14 in the league, while the Penmen finish the year 12-14 and 9-13.
Senior Megan Olsen (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) notched her fifth career 20-point game, scoring exactly 20 points on 8-of-17 shooting to reach 700 points for her career. Olsen also added four rebounds, four assists and two steals in her final game for Saint Michael's. Junior Alexa Long (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) netted 12 points and had six boards, two blocks and two steals. Senior Nicole Adach (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) totaled nine points, including a 4-for-4 showing on free throws, to reach 1,045 career points and move into 15th in program history, passing Kim Corey '84 and Margaret Lynch '85, who each had 1,039 points during their respective careers. Junior Cara Deroy (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) tallied eight points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists, and senior Kayla Carnell (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) had four rebounds in her college finale.
Senior Michelle DeRoma (West Roxbury, Mass./Mount Alvernia/American International) scored 22 points, shooting 8-of-11 from the field and knocking down 5-of-7 three-pointers, while adding four rebounds for Southern New Hampshire. Classmate Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine/Noble) netted 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting, grabbed 13 rebounds and tallied three steals, while senior Morgan Munson (Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia/Girls Grammar) contributed eight points and five boards. Sophomore Lorreta Rocha (Espargos, Cape Verde/Olavo Moniz) totaled seven points and three assists, classmate Brooke Springfield (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant) had six points and four assists and sophomore Kaylea Griffin (Green Springs, Ohio/Clyde) controlled five rebounds.
After the Penmen scored the game's first four points, the Purple Knights went on a 9-1 run, with the help of five points from Olsen, to move in front 9-5 in the first half's opening 5:13. The hosts used a 7-2 run to regain the lead before the teams battled to ties of 15, 17 and 22. Saint Michael's trailed by four points with 3:48 remaining in the half, but used three-pointers by Deroy and first-year Makenzie Burud (Red Hook, N.Y./Coleman Catholic) to climb back to a 32-30 deficit at the half.
The Purple Knights stayed within five points of the hosts until DeRoma buried a three to give Southern New Hampshire a 45-39 lead 7:16 into the second frame. Saint Michael's scored five of the next seven points before the Penmen used a 14-2 run during a 5:48 stretch to extend their advantage to 61-46. The visitors tallied the next five points, but couldn't cut the Southern New Hampshire lead to less than eight during the game's final minutes.
