COLCHESTER, Vt. - Junior Cara Deroy (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) converted a lay-in with 10.3 seconds remaining in the second half to give the Saint Michael's College women's basketball team a 62-60 victory over Southern Connecticut State University in Northeast-10 Conference action on Tuesday at Ross Sports Center. With the win, the Purple Knights, who have now won three straight, improve to 5-9 overall and 3-7 in the league, while the Owls, who advanced to the second round of last season's NCAA Tournament, drop to 4-9 and 1-9.
Senior Nicole Adach (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) led Saint Michael's with 20 points and six steals while also adding three rebounds. Adach hit 7-of-12 from the field, while shooting at a 3-of-4 clip from both three-point range and the free throw line. Junior Alexa Long (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) posted 10 points and seven rebounds, and senior Megan Olsen (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) had 10 points, three assists and three steals. First-year Makenzie Burud (Red Hook, N.Y./Coleman Catholic) netted eight points, grabbed four boards and provided three assists, while Deroy contributed six points and four assists. First-year Megan Gaudreau (Brooklyn, Conn./Pomfret School) finished with six points, and senior Kayla Carnell (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) controlled six rebounds.
First-year Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va./Annandale) totaled 21 points and nine rebounds for Southern Connecticut State, while sophomore Mariah Hankton (Upper Marlboro, Md./Saint Vincent Pallotti) netted 21 points and tallied three assists. Senior Camille Fantini (Andover, Mass./Andover) recorded 11 points, eight assists, five boards and three steals, and junior Moni Smith-Ocran (Bronx, N.Y./Dewitt Clinton) grabbed 10 rebounds. First-years Katie Stopera (Hollis, N.H./Hollis-Brookline) and Nicole Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) tallied five and four steals, respectively.
Following a 14-2 Owl run that put the visitors up, 56-55, Deroy converted a pair of free throws and a lay-up to give her team a 59-56 advantage with 1:25 to play in the second frame. Southern Connecticut State hit a lay-in before Adach drained a free throw with 42 ticks remaining to put the hosts up, 60-58. Hankton converted a game-tying lay-up with 30 seconds left before Deroy netted the winning bucket. Saint Michael's closed out the game without allowing the visitors a field goal attempt.
The first half's opening 13:17 saw three lead changes, with each team leading by as many as four. After the Owls moved in front, 22-18, with 5:41 remaining, the Purple Knights closed the half on a 22-4 run on the help of five three-pointers by three different players to take a 40-26 lead into the half. The hosts hit 5-of-10 from long range in the first half, while posting seven steals.
The Purple Knights return to the court on Saturday when they face American International College in a road match-up scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
