Purple Knights slip at Dominican in non-conference match-up

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College women's basketball team fell at Dominican College, 60-53, in a non-conference contest on Sunday at the Hennessy Center. After the loss, the Purple Knights drop to 2-8 overall, while the Chargers improve to 6-4.

Junior Cara Deroy (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) paced Saint Michael's with 14 points, including a 6-for-8 showing from the field, while adding five rebounds and three assists. Senior Nicole Adach (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) tallied 13 points and five boards, and classmate Megan Olsen (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) finished with nine points and five steals. First-year Makenzie Burud (Red Hook, N.Y./Coleman Catholic) also scored nine points and added nine rebounds, junior Alexa Long (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) collected seven boards, and first-year Megan Gaudreau (Brooklyn, Conn./Pomfret School) contributed four assists.

Junior KC Jentzen (Pearl River, N.Y./Nanuet) notched a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds for Dominican, while senior Lindsey Lopez (Elmwood Park, N.J./Immaculate Conception-Lodi) finished with 14 points and five assists. First-year Deja Gabbidon (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) scored nine points and controlled eight boards, and sophomore LaShonda Hathorne (Queens, N.Y./Saint John's Prep) added eight points and handed out three assists.

Three Purple Knights scored during a 7-1 run in the opening 4:31 of the game, and the visitors led by as many as eight points before the Chargers climbed back to a 16-13 deficit with 9:09 left in the opening frame. Saint Michael's put together an 8-0 run over a 3:35 span, during which it notched three of its seven first-half steals, to move in front 24-13. Dominican used an 8-0 run of its own to once again trail by three with 3:09 remaining in the period. The Purple Knights scored five of the half's final seven points to take a 29-23 advantage into the locker room.

Dominican used a 13-2 run that bridged halftime to grab a 34-31 advantage at 16:08 of the second half before Adach went on a personal 5-0 run, but the Chargers countered with an 11-1 run that left the hosts with a 45-37 lead with 11:53 remaining. The Purple Knights scored the next six points to cut their deficit to two with 9:56 left, but Dominican used an 8-3 run over a 1:58 stretch to extend its advantage to 53-46. Olsen completed a three-point play to cap a 7-2 Purple Knight run that pulled the visitors within 55-53 at 3:36, but the Chargers shot 5-for-7 from the free throw stripe over the remaining 3:21 while holding Saint Michael's scoreless on seven possessions to seal the victory.

Saint Michael's returns to action on Jan. 6 when it travels to regional power Franklin Pierce University for a 1:30 p.m. contest. The Ravens have qualified for the past five NCAA Tournaments.
