Purple Knights tipped by Saint Anselm on late bucket, fall 58-56

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's basketball team dropped a 58-56 decision to Saint Anselm College after junior Kierra Moore (Albany, N.Y./Academy of Holy Names) hit a lay-up with 1.2 ticks remaining in a Northeast-10 Conference tilt on Thursday at Ross Sports Center. After the defeat, the Purple Knights slip to 1-7 overall and 0-6 in the conference, while the Hawks improve to 4-5 and 1-5.

Senior Nicole Adach (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) netted a team-leading 22 points, hitting 7-of-11 from the field and shooting 7-for-7 from the free throw stripe, while adding four rebounds for Saint Michael's. First-year Makenzie Burud (Red Hook, N.Y./Coleman Catholic) finished with 11 points and seven boards, and senior Megan Olsen (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) recorded eight points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals. First-year Megan Gaudreau (Brooklyn, Conn./Pomfret School) tallied six points and four assists, while junior Alexa Long (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) added seven rebounds.

Sophomore Allie Jones (Wakefield, R.I./South Kingstown) led Saint Anselm with 13 points while contributing five rebounds and four assists. Junior Briana Jones (White Plains, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) scored 11 points and controlled five boards, while Moore added 10 points and five steals. Junior Ashley Viselli (Groveland, Mass./Pentucket Regional) converted eight points, and senior Curran Leighton (Dover, N.H./Dover) finished with seven points, five rebounds, three assists and three blocks. First-year Alexius Hampton (Charlotte, N.C./Harding University HS) netted five points and picked up three steals, while classmate Krista O'Gara (New Fairfield, Conn./Canterbury School) had four boards.

After trailing 52-49 with 2:26 remaining in the second half, the Purple Knights fought back to a pair of one-point deficits before Gaudreau knocked down a three-pointer with 49.0 seconds remaining to give the hosts a 56-54 advantage. Briana Jones converted a lay-in with 32.0 ticks left to knot the game at 56 before Moore's lay-in put the Hawks ahead, 58-56.

Adach scored seven straight Purple Knight points to put the hosts ahead 8-4 with 14:14 remaining in the opening half. After the Hawks knotted the contest at 8-8, Olsen drilled a three-pointer to cap a 7-0 Saint Michael's run at 8:45 to put the hosts up 15-8. Saint Anselm climbed back to trail 17-16, but the Purple Knights never surrendered their lead prior to intermission, as each side hit a pair of free throws in the half's remaining 3:34.

Saint Michael's led by as many as 10 in the second frame, as it held a 34-24 advantage with 11:53 remaining. The visitors used a 10-3 run to pull to within three with 9:36 left before the Purple Knights took six of the next eight points to extend their lead to 43-36. Moore hit a three-pointer to cap an 11-2 Saint Anselm run, giving the Hawks a 47-45 advantage with 4:11 remaining.

Saint Michael's is back in action on Dec. 15, when it squares off with Queens (N.Y.) College in a road contest scheduled for 2 p.m.
