PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - Saint Michael's College senior Logan Pintka (Schenectady, N.Y./Colonie Central) scored 24 points, including the 1,000th of her collegiate career, to lift the women's basketball team (7-6, 5-5 Northeast-10 Conference) to a surprising 79-72 overtime win at Pace University on Saturday afternoon.
Pintka, who needed 22 points entering today's game to become the 17th 1,000-point scorer in program history, reached the milestone with a free throw with 15 seconds left in overtime. She made 11-of-12 free throws in the contest, and added four rebounds and three assists.
Also for Saint Michael's, sophomore Nicole Adach (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) scored a career-high 21 points and added 11 rebounds, as she netted 7-of-9 field goals and 7-of-9 free throws. Junior Caitlin Quinn (Oakdale, Conn./Montville) recorded 15 points and three steals, and classmate Coreen Hennessy (Chatham, N.H./Fryeburg Academy) notched 11 points.
For Pace (14-3, 9-2), the top team in the "Others Receiving Votes" category in the NABC/Division II National's Coaches' Poll, Brittany Shields tallied 22 points and eight rebounds, while Brittany Huggins also scored 22 points.
The game was close from start to finish, with the biggest lead a 47-39 Saint Michael's advantage following a Hennessy 3-pointer with 12:58 left in regulation. Pace then scored the next seven points over a 3:30 span to pull to within one point. A Pace 3-pointer with 5:23 left in the second half gave the Setters their first lead in more than 13 minutes at 54-53, but the lead then changed 10 more times in the next five minutes. Pace appeared to take the final lead at 65-64 after a Huggins' free throw with 32 seconds left in the period, a margin that increased to 67-64 after a pair of Huggins' free throws with five seconds left in regulation. But Pintka drained a game-tying 3-pointer with just one second remaining in the second half, evening the score at 67-all and forcing overtime.
The Purple Knights never trailed in the extra session, as Saint Michael's scored the period's first eight points over a 2:20 span to lead 75-67, and capping a 11-0 run including Pintka's buzzer-beating trifecta. The Setters made one last run, pulling to within 75-72 with 1:08 on the clock, but four Pintka free throws in the final 15 seconds, including her milestone point, completed the upset victory for the Purple Knights.
The Purple Knights, winners of three straight, returns to action on Wednesday with a 7:30 p.m. contest at league-rival University of New Haven.
