Women's Basketball Can't Keep Pace In 67-44 Loss To Setters

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's basketball team (4-10, 2-9 Northeast-10 Conference) fell behind early and couldn't recover in suffering a 67-44 loss versus Pace University on Saturday afternoon at the Ross Sports Center.

For Pace (11-5, 8-3 NE-10), junior Lisa Welsome (Staten Island, N.Y.) tallied a career-high 25 points and added four steals, making 9-of-13 field goals. Sophomore Carol Johnson (New City, N.Y.) added 16 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while senior Taylor Losey (Bristol, Conn.) recorded 10 points, making 5-of-7 field goal attempts. The Setters shot 50 percent from the field in the contest (24-of-48), and committed just 11 turnovers (compared to 21 for Saint Michael???????s).

For the Purple Knights, junior Meghan McCormack (Barrie, Ont./Saint Peter's Secondary School) notched a team-best 12 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Senior Michelle Otey (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) added eight points and five rebounds as Saint Michael's shot just 27 percent from the field in the game (12-of-44), including 1-of-10 from 3-point territory.

Pace dominated the first 10 minutes of the game, as the Setters raced out to a 23-6 lead midway through the opening period. Saint Michael???????s cut the deficit to 33-22 at halftime, as the Purple Knights made 11-of-12 free throws in the first half (but just 5-of-24 field goals).

The Setters sealed the victory in the first three minutes of the second half, as the Setters opened the period on a 10-0 run to take a 43-22 lead with 17:05 remaining. Saint Michael's pulled to within 14 points on a couple of occasions, the last time at 54-40 following a lay-up from senior Alexis Keller (Harrington Park, N.J./Old Tappan) with 5:43 to go, but Pace then scored the next 11 points to erase all doubt.

Saint Michael's returns to action on Wednesday, as the Purple Knights host league-rival University of New Haven at 5:30 p.m. Pace visits conference-foe Southern New Hampshire University on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
