WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The Saint Michael's College women's basketball team (4-9, 2-8 Northeast-10 Conference) suffered a 71-65 overtime setback at Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday evening.
Senior Michelle Otey (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) led four Purple Knights who scored in double figures with 18 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Coreen Hennessy (Chatham, N.H./Fryeburg (Maine) Academy) added 12 points, the second straight game that she tied her career-high, as she made 8-of-12 free throws. Senior Alexis Keller (Harrington Park, N.J./Old Tappan) and junior Marilyn Ferreira (New London, N.H./Kearsarge Regional) chipped in 10 points apiece.
Four players also scored in double figures for SCSU (9-6, 6-4 NE-10), led by Jacqueline Johannes's 18 points and nine rebounds. The Owls' bench outscored Saint Michael's 28-13 in the contest, and SCSU held a 53-37 rebounding advantage to overcome 23 turnovers and just 32 percent shooting from the field.
Saint Michael's raced out to a 26-13 lead, but SCSU closed the first half on a 14-4 run to narrow its deficit to 30-27 at halftime. Neither team held more than a five-point lead in the second half, and the game went to overtime after Johannes tied the game at 61-all on a jumper with 20 seconds left in regulation.
In overtime, an Otey lay-up with two minutes to go in the extra session tied the game at 65-all. Those would be the final points for Saint Michael's, however, as the Owls closed the game on a 6-0 run. SCSU made 8-of-10 free throws in overtime, while Saint Michael's shot just 1-of-9 from the field in the extra five minutes, sealing its fate.
Saint Michael's plays its next two games at home, starting with Saturday's 1:30 p.m. contest versus league-rival Pace University at the Ross Sports Center.
