COLCHESTER, Vt. ? Saint Michael's College swept Saint Anselm College in a Northeast-10 Conference basketball doubleheader on Tuesday at the Ross Sports Center. In the opener, the Saint Michael's women (10-7, 7-6 NE-10) rallied for a 55-52 victory, and in the nightcap, the Saint Michael's men (6-9, 4-9 NE-10) snapped a seven-game losing skid with a 77-65 win.
In the women's contest, junior Alexis Keller (Harrington Park, N.J./Old Tappan) scored seven of her 14 points in a 15-4 run over the first 10 minutes of the second half, helping Saint Michael's erase a 32-28 halftime deficit and earn the win. Classmate Michelle Otey (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) had a game-high 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting for the Purple Knights, while senior Anna Florent (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider) scored nine points. Sophomore Marilyn Ferreira (New London, N.H./Kearsauge Regional) dished out a game-high nine assists as Saint Michael's had 14 assists and just nine turnovers in the contest.
For Saint Anselm (3-14, 1-11 NE-10), freshman Megan Howard (Saint Paul, Minn.) had a team-high 12 points and 13 rebounds, but made just 5-of-17 shots from the field. Classmate Haley Poupore (Malone, N.Y.) added 11 points for the Hawks, who shot just 34 percent from the field in the contest, and made just 6-of-13 free throws, including 3-of-9 in the second half. Local standout, freshman Katie Dorey (Burlington, Vt./Rice Memorial), had five points in 33 minutes.
After Saint Michael's run to start the second half gave the hosts a 43-36 lead, the Hawks scored the next six points to cut their margin to 43-42. Saint Anselm could never pull even, however, as a desperation 3-point try from junior Justine Lyons (Reading, Mass.) that would have tied the game in the waning seconds hit the back rim.
In the men's game, freshman Tyler Schilling (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka) had career-high ? and Saint Michael's season-high ? totals of 26 points and 14 rebounds as the Purple Knights improved to 6-2 at home this season, and won for the first time in seven weeks. Schilling made his first nine shots from the field, and finished 12-of-15 from the floor, as Saint Michael's never trailed after halftime. Senior Jon Zylstra (Uxbridge, Mass./Whitinsville Christian School) had a season-high 16 points and four blocks for the Purple Knights, while sophomore Nate Birr (Burnsville, Minn./Saint Thomas Academy) and freshman Qua'ron Pinckney (Bronx, N.Y./Saint Benedict's Prep) contributed 14 and 10 points, respectively. Freshman Alex Berthiaume (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) handed out a game-high nine assists as Saint Michael's had a stellar 20-13 assist-to-turnover ratio in the victory.
For Saint Anselm (10-6, 6-6 NE-10), sophomore Thomas Baudinet (Watertown, Conn.) led a balanced scoring attack with 13 points and 12 rebounds, but shot just 6-of-19 from the field. Classmate Pat Luptowski (Keene, N.H.) added 12 points, junior Greg Vetrano (Andover, Mass.) had 11 points and four assists, and sophomore John Tello (Ridgefield Park, N.J.) chipped in with 10 points. The Hawks, who have now lost five straight games after a 10-1 start, made just 38 percent of its field goal attempts, and shot just 5-of-12 from the foul line.
Saint Michael's led 36-31 at halftime, and stretched its led to nine points before the Hawks rallied to tie the game at 47-all with 13 minutes to go. However, Baudinet's offensive foul waved off a lay-up that would have given Saint Anselm the lead, and consecutive 3-pointers from Birr and senior Mike Iola (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional) gave the Purple Knights the lead for good as Saint Michael's earned the win.
Saint Michael's returns to action on Saturday, as the Purple Knights host league-rival University of New Haven in a doubleheader (women at 1:30 p.m., men at 3:30 p.m.). Saint Anselm next plays a league doubleheader on Saturday at American International College (women at 1:30 p.m., men at 3:30 p.m.)
